We have an exciting opportunity for a Design Assistant to join our Custom Publishing team on a permanent basis.
The team
The Custom Design team works across all of Penguin Random House Children’s imprints – Ladybird, Puffin and Penguin, on everything from novelty board books for babies, through picture books and middle grade to YA fiction.
Custom publishing covers a wide range of products, including boxsets, special editions and other novel packaging solutions, to support a diverse range of retailers’ needs outside of the core publishing lists. We work with a wide range of partners in the UK and across the world.
The role
This is a key support role and will report to the Senior Designer in our small team. This is a great opportunity to start your career in children’s publishing design. It’s an entry level position but you should be able to demonstrate a keen design eye, good design technical skills, and a desire to learn.
As Design Assistant, you will have responsibility for managing reprints as well as the opportunity to design a variety of titles under direction. You’ll contribute to the creative vision and commercial success of the division, involving yourself in all aspects of the work needed to bring a product to life.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Practical day to day design and admin support
- Managing reprints
- Adapting existing product to new printed formats
- Taking in corrections as directed
- Creating product mock-ups
What you’ll bring
You will be fluent in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator) and a working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint would be useful.
We’re also looking for someone who is:
- Organised, able to reprioritise and juggle multiple responsibilities
- Flexible in their approach and able to work to tight deadlines
- Creative, willing to contribute ideas, absorb feedback and manage changes of creative direction
- Inquisitive and keen to learn about all aspects of publishing design

Salary
You‘ll start on £26,500. Expect a £1,000 increase on your first anniversary in this role to reflect your growing contribution.
