The Components business sits in the Energy sector and designs, manufactures and supplies state of the art low and medium voltage cable accessories that enables customers installation requirements. 

Products we supply hold, join, terminate and protect our customers vital cable assets.  This role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to work as part of our UK R&D team and experience the dynamics of a busy technical engineering environment.

What you will be doing?

We are seeking an undergraduate to join the Components engineering team based at our factory in Wrexham. The successful candidate will join the diverse and experienced team who design, test and support a wide range of low and medium voltage cable accessories. This will be a 12-month placement beginning in July.

The position will focus on polymer science related to resin type materials used in cable accessories.  However, as part of a multi-disciplinary team the position will provide you with a broad materials background, together with an appreciation of cable accessory design, materials and testing. Typical tasks include:

  • Undertake and support projects to evaluate new and / or alternative materials with the aim of enhancing technical performance of existing resin formulations.
  • To build a knowledge of the Prysmian cold pour resin technologies to support the current manufacturing processes. 
  • To work as an integral part of the team to help it achieve its objectives in terms of new product development in the field of cold curing resin systems for cable joint encapsulation and other related products.
  • Undertake projects for the development of resin formulations for new applications.
  • Prepare and undertake test programmes associated with existing or new products including bench-marking of Prysmian and competitor products to identify cost reduction opportunities.
  • Carry out routine testing of resin formulations to evaluate material properties such as material flow and reactivity behaviour.
  • Involvement with in-house type approval testing of resin filled cable joints.

Who we are looking for

  • An undergraduate in chemistry, polymer science or other applicable course.
  • Good practical skills within a workshop and/or laboratory environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to assimilate and review technical data.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office).

NB. Due to the location of the factory, it would be advantageous to have a full UK driving licence or own transport.
