    Incorez is offering a 12-month Industrial Placement within it’s Research & Development Department at Preston. This will commence Summer (July) 2021 until Summer (July) 2022.

    This placement is aimed at students currently engaged in studying a relevant degree course in Chemistry, preferably Polymer Chemistry, with the intention to pursue a career in the field of Industrially Applied Chemistry.

    Main Purposes

    To become an integral part of the Research & Development team in Preston to support the development of advanced polymers and chemical intermediates that are fit for purpose, in accordance with the Product Creation Process. Whilst at your position you will work under the supervision of one of our experienced chemists and manage your own research projects, drawing in new understanding from data science tools.

    During the placement you will gain valuable experience in conducting organic and/or synthetic polymer laboratory work, product formulation and testing. There will also be opportunities to report and present your own findings as part of an enthusiastic R&D team. The acquired skillset during your placement will be transferable to many fields of chemistry or material science and provide a solid learning experience on which to build a career in industry.

    Key tasks and responsibilities

    • Ongoing coaching & mentoring by R&D Chemists and Data Scientists.
    • Responsible for the management and delivery of assigned projects within agreed project plans according to the Product Creation Process.
    • Undertake comprehensive training in the field of polyurethane/epoxy chemistry, organic chemical intermediate manufacture, coatings formulation and product testing. 
    • Conduct analysis and physical testing of developmental samples, including the formulation and testing within semi-finished products.
    • Accurately record and analyse all data using state-of-the-art software.
    • Prepare reports and presentations in a proficient and timely manner and present these to the R&D team and other internal stakeholders.
    • Provide general support for  day-to-day laboratory activities.
    • Support customer enquiries, manufacturing and quality issues if required.
    • Work in accordance with the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) policies and procedures of both the business and the R&D department.

    Skills and Requirements

    • Educated to HNC/A Level minimum in Chemistry or Material Science.
    • Knowledge of safe working practices (Risk Assessments & COSHH).
    • Practical experience of working in a laboratory. 
    • Have excellent organisational skills and is able to manage time efficiently to meet deadlines.
    • Is self-motivated and can work independently.
    • Have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
    • Is knowledgeable of Microsoft office packages; ChemDraw and data science software.
