Description of the Business Line or Department

GLBA/STS/MAI/FIN London are part of the wider Maritime Industries group of Societe Generale and cover a range on shipping clients and other stakeholders in the shipping industry in the EMEA region. The team originates senior secured lending opportunities for new and existing clients in accordance with the approved guidelines of the group and provides financial advisory and debt arranging services to key clients in relation to the debt financing of industrial shipping, floating infrastructure and increasingly for new sectors in the shipping industry supporting the decarbonisation of the industry. Together with our colleagues in other teams of Societe Generale we also work on more structured and commercial products which includes; leasing structures, export credit agency financings, strategic advisory, M&A and hybrid capital structures while also work closely with other Maritime Industries teams based in Paris, Dubai, Singapore and Hong-Kong.

Summary of the key purposes of the role

  • Support the team to originate and structure new transactions in line with the strategy and guidelines of the group
  • Assist in obtaining internal support and approvals for new transactions from relevant stakeholders
  • Play a meaningful role and support the deal teams during deal execution stage
  • Help monitor existing transactions in the portfolio, addressing waivers and reviewing annual reviews
  • Provision of team related information to business line management for reporting and monitoring purposes

Summary of responsibilities

  • Undertake research on new clients, projects or updates for client meetings and prepare internal weekly reports on funding costs, market reports, etc.
  • Help produce and present marketing material in meetings and pitches with strategic clients and external stakeholders of the team
  • Running profitability and regulatory capital models for new transactions
  • Helping produce credit applications for new transactions (in particular sections on loan-to-value, company summaries, etc.)
  • Know your customer checks (KYC) for new transactions and periodic reviews
  • Review documentation during execution of new deals and ensure drafting meets required standards, conditions and internal policies
  • Assist in closing processes, including checking condition precedent, working with closing team and hand-over to middle office
  • Help draft information memorandums for arranging roles or engagement letters with external parties
  • Build and/or review/audit financial models for transaction or client assessment
  • Maintain portfolio database with individual transaction details
  • Provide team related information and reporting to internal stakeholders
  • Work with internal stakeholders on portfolio monitoring and analysis

Competencies required

Candidate Background

  • A university degree or similar or sufficient industry experience
  • Any from the following would be considered a positive:
  • Structured/Corporate Finance or Strategic Advisory;
  • Commercial Shipping;
  • Broader energy sector; or
  • ESG activities related to the above.

  • Ability to write clear, structured and comprehensive emails and analysis for internal purposes and communications with clients;
  • Assist with assessment, structuring and documentation (i.e. termsheet, powerpoints, memos, loan documentation, engagement letters, mandates, etc.);
  • Strong competencies in financial modelling and corporate analysis with ability to use Bloomberg, Macros, etc. a plus; and
  • Knowledge of the shipping industry including the understanding of relevant sectors, specific clients, investors and banks.
