The role of a Design Executive at Taylor Wimpey is pivotal to the success of every home and community we build. As a Design and Planning Executive, you will be entrusted with the crucial responsibility of designing the communities that our customers call home. This encompasses the creation of houses, open spaces, and social areas that foster vibrant living environments.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Taylor Wimpey Trainee Programme and train to become a qualified Design Executive. This role is ideal for recent graduates who have earned their degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction, or a Planning-focused discipline and are eager to develop their professional experience.

Throughout your training, you will gain valuable experience in the following areas:

Land assessment & site visits

  • Understand the principles of site Health & Safety (H&S) and enhance your knowledge with each site visit to improve quality assurance.
  • Review information from Strategic Land to assess potential risks and impacts on layout design.
  • Evaluate technical considerations, including constraints and opportunities, and their effects on design.
  • Learn about legal considerations, including Land Registry plans and site discrepancies.

Developing a site layout

  • Attend live project meetings on-site with the Project Architect and project team.
  • Shadow an Architect on new land designs and prepare preliminary sketches considering access, drainage, and services.
  • Understand the business needs, construction route, and exit strategy related to layout design.
  • Learn the value of plotting efficiency tools and design/plotting rules.
  • Participate in AutoCAD courses or internal training.

Planning applications

  • Collate information on representations and consultee feedback from planning portals.
  • Understand different types of planning applications (PPiP, AMSC, further applications, S42, etc.).
  • Attend planning committee and/or Local Council Committee meetings to observe viewpoints, opinions, and political elements in decision-making.

Site investigation

Instruct land assessments and understand the implications of reports on:

  • Archaeological Assessments
  • Ecological Assessments
  • Air Quality
  • Energy Strategy
  • Landscape Reports
  • Arboriculture

Health & safety

  • Understand NHBC conditions for sites.
  • Learn about key CDM roles and responsibilities and complete relevant questionnaires.
  • Gain an understanding of design principles/CDM and principles of prevention, as well as the interdependencies of different designs.
  • Understand initial Design Risk Reviews (DRR), secondary DRR, and OSFRA.
