Role overview
In the Engineering department the successful students will join a large team working on real business projects, carrying out a variety of project management tasks.
We're looking for innovative students who can bring new perspectives to our work.
We will help you gain an understanding of the projects being undertaken by United Utilities and the methods used to deliver them. Specific tasks will be assigned during the placement. You will be accountable for delivering these with the support of experienced project managers and engineers.
During your placement you will also be given the opportunity to visit some of our sites. You'll see first-hand how our existing process plants produce clean safe drinking water and how we treat wastewater in order to release it safely back in to the environment. You'll also get to see how our new projects relate to the existing infrastructure, bringing improvements for future generations.
You will also get the opportunity to mix with our current graduates who can share experiences, tips and guidance with you for the next steps in your career.
Working with our project managers and other engineering disciplines you will assist our team in the delivery of capital projects. The type of work covered by our project teams' cover all the key aspects of project management and we have projects across the whole of the typical project lifecycle: from feasibility through to operational handover.
We work with a variety of in-house and external supply-chain partners across the business to deliver the projects and there will be an opportunity to get involved with managing across a wide variety of stakeholders. For many schemes this also extends to external stakeholders and you'll see how we interface and develop our projects with our customers in mind.
During your placement, under the guidance of your manager, you will gain an overview of the type of work undertaken and work within a team delivering project work. This will give you a good understanding of the role and provide real experience that you can draw upon as you complete your studies and develop as a project manager.
Knowledge and skills
What we are looking for:
United Utilities are looking for undergraduate Engineers in their penultimate year of studying a project management degree or an engineering degree with project management. The successful applicant will also have an interest in the water sector.
To apply you need to:
- Have researched and have knowledge of United Utilities' project activities.
- Be working towards at least a 2:1 in a relevant degree.
- Have varied technical knowledge, not only through academic experience, but also through social and professional experience.
- Have a strong foundation of maths and science A-levels.
- Have good computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office.
- Be motivated and enthusiastic, an excellent team player, possessing ambition and drive.
- Possess good written and interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate and influence across all levels.
- Be able to be comfortable working flexibly across a range of tasks and activities to deadlines as well as being able to prioritise your time.
