Are you a forward thinking and aspiring undergraduate ready to take your next steps in your career? Yunex Traffic is looking for aspiring undergraduates to join our Research & Development Innovation team on a 12-month internship contract as part of our Intern Development Programme.

What does this team do? The team is involved in a range of technology scoping activities and works across the R&D team disciplines producing proof of concepts for emerging technologies.

As our cities get bigger and more complex, Yunex Traffic makes mobility safer, more efficient, and more sustainable with forward-looking infrastructure and transport solutions. Yunex Traffic designs, markets, manufactures, installs, and maintains a wide portfolio of international traffic management products and is the UK market leader in the traffic signal business.

This includes intersection and pedestrian traffic controllers, intelligent urban traffic control systems, variable message signs, public transport, and car park guidance systems to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow in congested urban and inter-urban areas.

An opportunity to apply the skills you have developed at University and to match these to application spaces related to Yunex’s products and underlying technologies, building proof of concepts.

Your internship will focus on deriving value from applying machine learning or artificial intelligence techniques to derive insights from data, improve process efficiencies and enhance products.

An opportunity to integrate software with hardware so if you have a desire to try embedded software development or edge computing, then that is in scope for this placement

Whilst not essential, it would be a bonus if you already have experience with

Creating independent solutions beyond those introduced in your studies.

Minimum educational requirements

This role will ideally suit an undergraduate studying computer science or a software biased subject, or an MSc student who already has a computer science degree and is perhaps studying AI or data science
Competency in at least 2 programming languages : Python plus one of the following C, C++,C#, Rust or Java, Javascript and enthusiasm to be learning more.
Has formally studied the software and system design lifecycle. Can use formal methods for design.
Experience of debugging software and in problem solving.
Familiar with using structured data formats (JSON, XML, relational databases, spreadsheets, etc.) and ability to analyse, clean or visualise data (for example using Python, spreadsheets, SQL or other technologies).
Working knowledge of a cloud-based system such as AWS, GCP or Azure. i.e. have used cloud services, can explain basics of identity and access management and used either infrastructure/ platform/ software as a service in a software engineering project.

Recruitment process

Applications for our internships will close on 21st January 2024

We will be holding in-person 'Getting to know Yu' days between mid February – early March 2024 which will allow candidates the best opportunity to showcase their potential and suitability for this role by using a variety of assessment types. This session will be held in an afternoon or morning slot and will typically include a combination of tasks and activities such as group problem-solving tasks, individual interviews, presentations, and role simulation exercises.

For some roles, there will also be an initial video (Microsoft Teams) or telephone interview - these are likely to be held during February 2024, before the Getting to Know Yu day. These interviews are typically competency based and a chance for us to find out what your motivations are for your next career.

Our 2024 interns will join the business in early September 2024 so you must be available from this time, for 12 months.
