Looking at the role: Kristy's internship at IHS Markit

Book open Reading time: 2 mins

Bright Network member Kristy is in her final year at LSE completing her BSc in Government. She kindly shared with us her career journey with IHS Markit, which all started with her securing a place on their Summer Intern Programme…

What’s the role?

I was an Intern in the Maritime and Trade Department on a 10 week programme over the summer. My role oriented around product management, involved meeting with clients and understanding the services that competitors in the market offered. During the second half of the programme, interns completed an Innovation Challenge Project. This role gave me a practical knowledge grounded in the complex environment of seaborne trade.

What made you go for IHS Markit and for this role in particular?

I knew that I didn’t want to pursue a more mainstream career, and that's why a data company appealed to me so much. This role allowed me to put my interest in not only economics, but public policy and political risk, into action in other ways. I met IHS Markit at my university’s career fair and was immediately impressed with how their interests aligned with my own.

And how did you find the application process? What advice would you give to our members?

I was pleasantly surprised that the application process was so straightforward – I simply sent off my CV and was invited for an interview. What helped was that I was able to develop a close relationship with IHS Markit from the start. To me, this is as important as gathering research online. Talking to them in person and getting to know what the company is about in this way will allow you to build connections with the team from the outset. This will allow you to go beyond the traditional view of companies and will impress employers at interview.

What’s next for you? And what are you most excited for?

IHS Markit have offered me a full-time role in Product Management for when I finish my studies, which I am very excited to accept! I look forward to meeting new clients to extend the customer base, continuing on a steep learning curve and further developing professionally and personally at IHS Markit.
