Anika is a BSc Biochemistry graduate from the University of Birmingham and a MSc Medical Biotechnology and Business Management graduate from the University of Warwick. She secured a Business and Commercial Banking Graduate role at Lloyds Banking Group, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I always loved science growing up, so I chose to study Biochemistry before deciding to complete a Master’s in Medical Biotechnology and Business Management.
I had little understanding of business management beforehand, but the course opened my eyes to a whole new area of science outside the lab and completely changed my career trajectory. I now feel that banking brings together all my interests in the best possible way.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“Lloyds Banking Group stood out to me because of their forward-thinking approach to the future and sustainability, as well as their passion for supporting small businesses.
The company’s approach to inclusivity and embracing diversity was also an important factor for me, and I felt a sense of community just from doing my research.”
What was your application journey like?
“I prepared for the role by completing the Application Processes module on Bright Network Academy, where I learnt what to expect from the process. I also read about how other graduates approached their applications.
I was most nervous about the job insights assessment, which was the second stage in the application process, because it involved a pre-recorded video interview. This is something I’ve struggled with in other applications, as I often felt unprepared and nervous.
I used feedback from previous applications, as well as support from friends and family, to create a strategy for how I was going to approach my preparation time and overcome my irrational fear of the camera being on.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“Bright Network provided some fantastic insight into both banking and finance in general, which was especially useful coming from a science background.
Bright Network’s Academy and Internship Experience UK presented insights and information clearly and accessibly, helping me identify the skills I already had that could be suited to a career in banking. They also offered fantastic application tips on how to successfully secure a place on a graduate scheme.
The student insights and success stories helped me decide that this was the right industry for me. I’ve since created a rough career plan that combines my interest in banking with my background in science.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“Graduate scheme applications are tough and competitive, so naturally I had many rejections along the way.
Rejections never get easier, so I’m proud that I didn’t give up and used everything I learnt through Bright Network to eventually secure a role I truly wanted.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“For science students — don’t be afraid to explore other industries!
The analytical skills I developed at university will support me in my graduate role and, I hope, enable me to specialise in science clients later in my career.”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?
“I’m hoping to use my background in Biotechnology to eventually work in a specialist banking function.
I’m most looking forward to learning how banks help businesses make more informed operational decisions, while working directly with clients from a range of industries to understand their needs and gain insight into how businesses operate across different sectors.”
