Anna is an Economics and Business Management graduate from Newcastle University. She secured an Audit Assistant – Trainee Chartered Accountant role at Saffery in London, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“Working in Audit within Film and TV allows me to combine my interests in business and the creative industries. Growing up, I didn’t have a set idea of what I wanted to be, so going to university gave me the time and resources to consider all options available to me.
It was actually my sister who encouraged me to start studying business during my A-Levels. She could see that I enjoyed being in the workplace, seeing how businesses operate and learning more about the world of finance. I’m very grateful for her guidance as I wouldn’t have studied my degree or be in this role without her.
I completed a placement year during my third year and whilst the actual role wasn't quite right for me, there were aspects of the job that I enjoyed that led me to apply for an accounting and audit-based role.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“I was attracted to this role because, before seeing the opening on Bright Network, I was unaware that you could specialise so early on in an accountancy training scheme.
I knew I'd enjoy the niche, so researched some more into the company. I discovered that the culture and support offered were exactly what I was looking for in a graduate role, which solidified my decision to apply.”
What was the application process like?
“The application process involved various types of interviews and assessments within the multiple stages.
This was challenging, as it required being well-researched about the business, its operating environment and understanding the qualification I’m taking alongside the role.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I found the role on the Bright Network site and helpfully received notifications reminding me of job application opening and closing dates.
This was especially valuable during the application process as I was job-hunting while travelling post-university – it really helped me stay organised across different time zones!”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
"My proudest moment was definitely receiving an offer for my current role — it was such a relief after putting in so much time and effort. The hard work really pays off when it’s a job you truly want!
The biggest challenge I faced was being almost a year out of university and unable to easily visit campus or access the career services available there.
That's where Bright Network's advice was really helpful regarding applications, CVs and interviews.”
What have you learnt from going through the process?
"Through the application process, I’ve learnt that communication skills are so important and how using university careers teams and Bright Network resources can really help to develop your inter-personal skills.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“I think the best way to stay on track with graduate job applications is to create your own tracker with deadlines, what each stage you are at with each application and any feedback you may have received. Bright Network can help with tracking that!
For anyone applying for a graduate role, my best advice is to remember that you’re capable and to not get disheartened by rejection! Learn from the feedback you receive and make use of as many resources as you can.
Since starting my role, I’ve had many potential applicants contact me through LinkedIn. I think this is a great way to learn more about the role, the company and it can help reduce any nerves you might have.”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?
“I’m looking forward to qualifying in the ACA over the coming years and continuing to develop my knowledge in both Accountancy and the Film and TV industry.
I’m also excited about taking on mentoring roles in the future. I have past management experience and want to make the most of it, as I really enjoy helping more junior staff to learn and develop.”
