Elliot’s insights into securing a trainee solicitor role with Ashurst

Created on 5 Dec 2022

We recently caught up with Elliot about securing a trainee solicitor role with Ashurst, top tips for the application process and how Bright Network helped when secure the role

What stood out to you about Ashurst?

I attended the firm's open day and found Trainees and Associates to be friendly and collegiate. I was drawn to the culture. This was evident to me in the firm’s approach to pro bono work and diversity and inclusion, which is particularly important to me.

Having an interest in business and the news, I knew I wanted to work for an international firm. Ashurst offers  international secondment opportunities and has a strong presence in markets that interest me, like Asia Pacific.

Also, the work of course! The firm is strong in the Energy, Infrastructure, and Financial Services sectors. Which are areas I was keen to explore.

How did you make your application stand out?

Research and authenticity.

Really understanding the firm, its clients and strategy helped. I used every opportunity to show I understood what the firm does and how that differs from its competition. By interacting with the firm directly, I was able to ask questions that can't be found online.

I also made sure to highlight the aspects of the firm that genuinely interested me. For example, I am interested in technology and highlighted how I developed my interest and how this ties into the firm's work with Ashurst Advance. Through linking excellent research about the firm with your experience and interests you greatly improve your application.

What part of the application process did you find the most challenging?

For me, it was the Partner interview, which is the final stage. I found this to be the most rigorous and intellectually challenging part. This covered both basic commercial questions and fictional scenarios where I had to suggest advice and pick out issues.

They pushed me and tested my commercial instinct. In hindsight, not overthinking answers and taking a common sense approach would have benefited me.

The purpose of the interview is to look for potential, not polish.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

Bright Network was hugely helpful throughout the process. I attended both a Diversity and Inclusion event, Top 100 Future Lawyers, and Bright Network FESTIVAL. This was a great opportunity to engage with top firms and I referenced some of the events in my applications.

Many Bright Network members are like-minded individuals at a similar stage, which provides a ready-made network. The online resources also provide useful insights from successful candidates, which can help with applications.

Did you get any feedback in the past that helped you with your application?

Be yourself and have confidence in your ability.

You don't need to be a particular 'type' to be successful in law. There is a place for everyone, regardless of background. If you have to mould yourself to 'fit in', is it really the place for you?

The application process is therefore as much for you as it is for firms. So, have confidence in your ability, find the best firm for you and advocate for yourself!

What are your top tips for tackling tough interview questions?

Good preparation will help, but you can't guess everything that could be asked. Try to stay composed, take a minute to think. You don’t need to answer straight away. Use this time to think about the point of the question. Is it to see if you can demonstrate a skill or just to test how

you think on your feet? Answer genuinely. It is better to use examples from part-time work or volunteering than talk about something you know little about.

What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?

  1. Don't overlook the simple things. Spelling and grammar matter
  2. Treat commercial awareness like a habit, don't leave it to the day before an interview
  3. Rejection is tough, but it can be a great lesson
