Securing a graduate Risk Advisory role with Deloitte - Top tips from Juliette

Created on 12 Jun 2017

We caught up with Bright Network member Juliette, currently studying Maths at York, to find out how she secured a role at Deloitte in their Risk Advisory division after applying through the Bright Network fast-track scheme.

Please tell us about the application process - what did you have to do?

I was able to apply early through Bright Network, which made a big difference. I sat my initial performance tests in August then moved onto my first interview in September which was over two hours long hours long. I had to review a case study and give my professional opinion on what course of action should be taken, which was really interesting but all very challenging. Luckily it was more of a conversation than a formal question/answer interview.

In the second part of interview I was given the opportunity to talk through an achievement or project that I felt showed off the values of Deloitte and expressed the qualities and competencies they look for in a candidate.

The second interview was only an hour long but it was with a partner. We were told to produce a presentation on one of the subjects they sent me, I chose audit. Again, it was more like a conversation for everyone to decide whether you’d be suitable for the role and whether Deloitte was the place for you. I also had the chance to ask the partner questions, and he was surprisingly open about his career and how he got where he was.

What advice would you give to others who want the same career?

Take the time to look around and see which department is going to be best for you. There is such a variety, see what interests you and go with that – don’t base it on where you’re most likely to get into.

I’m quite an analytical person so I really wanted to find a role where I could make use of that. I chose Deloitte because they have such a good reputation all over the world and offer the opportunity to work with a huge range of clients in lots of different industries.

I researched everything from their core competencies required for the role, right through to testimonies from others online that had already completed the process. Deloitte also provided a lot of information, which was incredibly useful. Stay up to date with what they are doing - knowing the state of market and the successes of their competitors is paramount.

Ultimately, try and enjoy the process. It doesn’t just hinge on whether they like you, but also on how comfortable you feel in their company too.
