Tamera’s insights into securing an internship with Equinix

Created on 12 Dec 2022

We recently caught up with Tamera about how she secured a Global Technical Sales internship with Equinix, her top tips for the application process and how Bright Network helped her secure the role.

What stood out to you about Equinix?

I first heard about Equinix at a diversity and inclusion event. They had a stand and I was able to speak to a representative. They were all really nice! The amount they were offering really stood out to me. Looking for internships is overwhelming, especially if you don’t know what you want to do after university, and I saw they had a wide range of internships. I connected with a few of them and looked at some of the vacancies on the Bright Network website, applied and got an interview!

How did you make your application stand out?

I used every resource available to me! I was watching YouTube videos, spoke to my university’s career service (I’m sure they were tired of me by the end), researched Equinix - their sustainability and diversity policies really stood out to me.

What part of the application process did you find the most challenging?

The most daunting part was the interviews. It was easier to write a great CV, but it’s harder to sell yourself in person.

How did Bright Network help you secure this role?

I used the Academy courses that Bright Network offers. I also get the commercial awareness updates. When I attended the diversity event, there was a talk that Bright Network ran about interviews and improving your CV which I found incredibly helpful. Also, I was able to talk to people who’d been through the same process too which was useful and reassuring.

Did you get any feedback in the past that helped you with your application?

I was told after a previous interview that they felt they had to probe me a bit to get an answer to their questions. They told me to take my time in answering the questions. I took some time to work out how I can find a middle ground - answer questions without saying everything in my head! I practised a lot with my friends and careers service.

What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?

  1. Get used to rejections. I’ve had so many in the past and I’ve come to know that it’s not personal. If they give you feedback, try to take it onboard and learn from it.
  2. Work on the quality of your applications. It can be overwhelming to have lots of applications going at once, but it’s important to make the quality great rather than focusing on quantity.
  3. Be authentic. Don’t include things in your applications just because you think the company will like it. You want to find a company that matches your values where you can fit in, so be authentic in your applications and interviews.
