Graduate insight into securing a Training Contract with Linklaters - Top tips from Ifrath, a Trainee Solicitor

Created on 26 Jul 2017

Why did you choose this firm and this role?

I attended a Linklaters careers event at the University of Edinburgh. The firm immediately stood out for me as being far more approachable than some of the other law firms that had also visited campus. After researching the firm thoroughly, I was impressed by the breadth and calibre of its work and decided to apply.

What was the toughest part of the application process and what was your favourite part?

The toughest part of applying for a Linklaters Training Contract was being rejected! I had applied for a summer scheme and was unsuccessful. This really knocked my confidence but I was determined to try again. I then applied for their winter scheme after months of preparation and even more research on the firm and its competitors. I think this paid off because I was successful in securing a place on the scheme and eventually in securing a Training Contract!

Were you surprised by anything in the process?

I was surprised by my interview feedback as I was told that I appeared "too polished" which is the last thing I expected. I think this goes to show that applicants should not over prepare or memorise answers as, although I was successful in the end, I could have tried to be more natural in my interview.

What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?

1. Research! I treated my interview as an extra exam by preparing flash cards and notes. Although this may not work for everyone, I think it's better to be over prepared than under prepared.

2. Dress smart. It's an interview! Although I don't think your appearance is a reflection of your intelligence, it does show that you care about the job you're after.

3. Be yourself. This sounds cliché, but I was rejected in all the interviews where I was trying to be what I thought a firm wanted. In the end, I decided to just loosen up and be myself and it worked. That being said, remember humour is subjective so be careful with any jokes!

What's your lucky charm or pre-interview ritual?

Peppermint tea before my interview, it helps settle my stomach! I also call my best friend before every interview so he can tell me it's all going to be ok.
