Jula - Success Story

Book open Reading time: 5 mins

We recently spoke to Jula from Bloomberg and asked her a few questions about her start at Bloomberg. She tells you more about Bloomberg as an employer and gives you valuable tips for your application process.

What has particularly struck you about Bloomberg?

Bloomberg has an outstanding reputation for innovation and market leadership in the business and financial information industry. Bloomberg is at the forefront of technological developments in the financial sector and has made a name for itself through continuous innovation. Another notable aspect is the diverse and dynamic office culture at Bloomberg. This culture obviously fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and teamwork, which is very important in today's business world.

A key element that characterises Bloomberg is the Bloomberg Terminal product. This enjoys a high reputation among users in the financial world. Those who once have access to this system no longer want to use competing products. This emphasises the quality and user-friendliness of the terminal and its role as an indispensable tool in the financial sector.

Overall, Bloomberg presents itself as a pioneer in the financial world, both in terms of corporate culture and technological innovation. This combination of advanced technology and a collaborative corporate culture makes Bloomberg a remarkable and forward-looking company in its industry.

How did you manage to make your application stand out?

To make my application stand out, I wrote a compelling cover letter in addition to a well-structured and detailed CV outlining my previous experience. In this letter, I have intensively discussed why I specifically want to work at Bloomberg and why I am the ideal candidate for the position I am applying for. I emphasised my skillset and special abilities and used specific examples to illustrate how and where I have successfully applied these skills.

The most important thing about my application was the clear presentation of my motivation. By carefully crafting my cover letter, I was able to showcase not only my skills and experience, but also my passion and strong interest in working at Bloomberg. This personalised and targeted approach helped my application stand out from others and show the recruiters that I was not only qualified, but also highly motivated and committed to contributing to the company.

What was the hardest part of the application process for you?

The most challenging part of the application process for me was the on-site assessment day. This final phase consisted of an interesting case study and a final interview with two managers. Despite the challenge of this final round, the Bloomberg recruiting team made the day very enjoyable. In particular, the lunch together and the office tour helped to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The interviewers were extremely courteous and friendly, which made the situation much easier. The interview felt more like a constructive conversation in which I felt comfortable and valued. This positive experience helped me to focus on my strengths and interact with confidence.

Overall, the assessment day was an enriching experience that gave me deep insights into Bloomberg's corporate culture and showed me that I can be successful in such an environment. It was an opportunity to put my skills to the test while getting a feel for the working environment at Bloomberg.

Are there any strategies that have helped you in particular?

Yes, there were some strategies that particularly helped me in the application process. Comprehensive preparation was crucial. Firstly, I did a lot of research into Bloomberg as a company. This included understanding their customer base, the products they offer and the main competitors in the market. This research helped me to get a clear picture of Bloomberg's positioning and business model.

Another important aspect was the deep understanding of the role and position I was applying for. In a company that operates in fintech, finance and data, it is essential to familiarise yourself with current topics and trends in these sectors. I therefore studied in depth topics such as big data, regulatory frameworks, technological developments, ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and specifically Bloomberg's role in these areas.

This thorough preparation enabled me to provide informed and relevant answers during the interview process and demonstrated my genuine interest and commitment to the position and the company. By understanding the industry trends and challenges, I was also able to demonstrate how I could specifically contribute to the further development of the company. This approach was very effective in my case and contributed significantly to the success of my application.

What are your tips for overcoming difficult questions in a job interview?

To master difficult questions in a job interview, it is important to take time to think about the question and formulate a structured answer. It is not unusual to not know the answer to some questions spontaneously. In such cases, it is better to be honest and admit that you don't know the answer rather than trying to give an unconvincing answer.

Another tip is to remember that there is no strict right or wrong answer to many questions. It's often about how you present your thoughts and opinions. Honesty is key here. It is important to remain authentic and base your answer on personal experiences or beliefs.

It can also be helpful to practise some common interview questions in advance and think about how you would respond to different scenarios or challenges. This will give you the confidence and calm you need to answer unexpected questions more calmly in the actual interview.

Ultimately, it's important to trust yourself and accept that nobody is omniscient.

Have you received any tips in the past that helped you with your application?

Yes, I have received some valuable tips in the past that have helped me enormously with my application. One of the most important pieces of advice was that thorough preparation is crucial. Another useful tip was to be authentic in the interview and give honest answers. These tips, combined with confidence and a positive attitude, helped me to successfully go through the application process and present myself well in the interviews.

What three tips would you give Bright Network members who want to follow in your footsteps?

  1. Use the Bloomberg Terminal: If you have the opportunity to use a Bloomberg Terminal, such as through university access or at your current employer, take advantage of it. Experiment with the terminal to familiarise yourself with its functions and operation. This hands-on experience with a key Bloomberg tool not only shows your commitment and interest, but also prepares you for potential questions during the interview.
  2. Prepare well and do thorough research: It is essential to do in-depth research on the company. Understand Bloomberg's products, clientele and market position. It is equally important to have a solid understanding of current issues and trends in the financial and technology industry as these are relevant to Bloomberg. A thoughtful and informed approach demonstrates your seriousness and ability to immerse yourself in complex topics.
  3. Reach out to current employees: Don't be afraid to reach out to current Bloomberg employees, like myself, if you have questions about the company or the application process. Talking to someone who is already part of the company can give you invaluable insights and practical tips that go beyond what you can find in job descriptions or on the website.
