The role
A 13-month industrial work placement as an electronics engineer working in analytical instrumentation as part of a product design and development team within a leading global engineering corporation. We are looking for a year in industry student to join our development team in St Neots, for a 13-month placement. During the placement you will be part of a development team and help with the ongoing engineering work, in addition to this you will be assigned an individual project to be completed over the year with us.
As part of your role, we also ask the year in industry placement students to be STEM Ambassadors for the company, lead on STEM activities and represent ABB at STEM events throughout the year. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK, have a UK passport or hold the appropriate Work / Student Visa to allow work placements. ABB is unable to sponsor Visa applications for the year in industry roles. The Year in industry role is for students at UK universities taking a year in industry as part of a recognized qualification. Not open to graduates or postgraduates.
Your responsibilities
- Collaborating with electronics hardware specialists in the design and validation of innovative and reliable analogue and digital electronics solutions to required product specifications and agreed timescales.
- Collaborating with other departments, e.g., product management supply chain, manufacturing, production engineering, quality assurance.
- Collaborating with embedded software engineers in the design, implementation and validating of embedded software for microcontroller-based electronics products, primarily written in C, completed to agreed timescales and specification.
- Supporting maintenance activities, including root cause analysis of hardware and software related issues.
- Working within a multi-functional team of design engineers on new product development projects and legacy product design enhancements.
- Estimating, planning and documenting own work at all stages of development cycle.
- Team working, communicating with and providing technical support to other departments, although working independently if necessary.
- Applying a variety of accepted technology concepts as well as having the resourcefulness to apply new methodologies and technologies.
- Complying with the corporate and regulatory standards and systems relevant to the workplace for quality, safe working, ethics and integrity, environment and risk management.
- Planning and prioritising own tasks and reviewing progress against the objectives and project plans of a wider project team.
- Finding solutions to routine and non-routine problems and contributing to development of solutions to complex problems.
- Critically evaluating own activities and keeping detailed accurate records.
Your background
- Ongoing undergraduate studies in electronic engineering or a related subject and able to spend 13 months in industrial employment - essential
- Basic knowledge of analogue / digital electronics - essential
- Basic competency in software design and programming of microcontroller systems using C - essential
- Familiarity with ECAD tools e.g., KiCAD, Altium, etc - essential
- Experience using bench top and/or handheld hardware diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters, etc - desirable
- Practical electronics experience e.g., soldering, prototyping - desirable
- Experience of other programming e.g., Python, C++, LabView, etc - desirable
- Basic Knowledge of Version Control System - desirable
