    At the group of Material Specialist Engineers, we provide technical solutions to materials related problems, related to the manufacture of flight hardware.

    The materials and processes team works on telecoms, earth observation, navigation and science programmes, with some science missions focusing on planets such as Mars, Venus and others. We ensure that the materials and processes used on these spacecraft are fit for the mission environment.

    Proving suitability may include the need for qualification testing of materials and parts.

    What you will be doing

    • Participate in materials and processes selection, development, evaluation and qualification programmes for spacecraft;
    • Problem solving, data analysis, present findings;
    • Assist in researching new materials and their applicability to spacecraft;
    • Develop reporting and communication skills;
    • Develop knowledge of spacecraft materials and processes engineering;
    • You will fully use your knowledge of metallic and non-metallic material properties, and be expected to develop your understanding on how materials perform in a space environment (radiation, thermal, vacuum);
    • Apply knowledge gained at university in a commercial environment;
    • Working within a team or individually, you will interface with people at all levels – Shop Floor, Project Teams, Engineers, through to management and Customers.

    Requirements

    Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Working towards a Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Physics Degree;
    • Interested in developing themselves by learning from the team and from the work that you undertake;
    • Strong team player;
    • Positive attitude towards completing tasks.
