    Our team is working on novel research projects pertaining to the field of optical communication and quantum security solutions. We design and build compact laser communication prototypes and demonstration systems that are tested in our Filton labs and flown on drones at various airfields in the UK.

    We make use of rapid prototyping techniques including optical/mechanical design, carbon fibre cutting and 3D printing. We collaborate with key players in the UK as well as the rest of Europe and the US.

    What will you be doing?

    The department "Communication Technologies" within Airbus Central Research and Technology is working on advanced solutions for optical airborne connectivity.

    In this frame, the aim of this work is to design, implement and test mechanical subsystems for optical communication systems.

    • Support the design, assembly and test of a coarse pointing system for a free-space optical communication system.
    • Support for the lab work.
    • Mechanical design skills and use of programs and techniques (ie. Autodesk, FreeCad).

    Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

    Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Active enrollment in studying an Engineering discipline, preferable Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, RF.
    • Mechanical design skills and use of programs and techniques (ie. Autodesk, FreeCad).
    • Knowledge on control theory and programming experience with microcontrollers (ie: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.)
    • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.
