    There has never been a more exciting time to work on Hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in the System Safety & Reliability team at Airbus.

    Along with our commitment to continually improve and support our current aircraft and to make game-changing headway with our new fleet - such as the recent first flight of our new revolutionary A321XLR - we are also breaking boundaries with our new exciting ZeroE Hydrogen-fueled aircraft plans, whilst also paving the way to certify 100% SAF use and reduce the environmental footprint of our aircraft. As part of our close-knit team, you will be at the forefront of these developments.

    System Safety and Reliability within the UK works predominantly on the Landing Gear and Fuel systems and supports Systems, Manufacturing Engineering (ME) and Structures Engineering teams. Our team work on all Aircraft and projects throughout the development lifecycle of an Aircraft; starting with Research and Technology (R&T) projects (such as ZeroE and the next generation of Aircraft), to Flight Test campaigns (for example XLR, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)), through to Entry Into Service and a key contributor to supporting the Continued Airworthiness of the full Airbus Aircraft fleet.

    Moreover, our team is a transnational team where there are around 70+ safety engineers which are based in five separate locations around Europe and accountable for the safety activities (functional and physical) for all Airbus aircraft systems. Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge utilising the extensive training available and the international experts within the team.

    What you will be doing

    You will be working on ensuring highest safety standards for the next generation of environmentally friendly aircrafts fuelled by SAF and liquid hydrogen (ZeroE).

    Specifically, you will be looking at Fuel Tank Safety topics, where you will have the opportunity to evaluate risks associated with existing designs and subsequently propose mitigation measures to improve the overall safety. To put it succinctly, you can play a key role in supporting the design of the future fuel systems for Airbus’ Next Generation aircraft.

    Therefore, it is expected for you to be able to work in a challenging research and technology environment within the System Safety & Reliability team, where you can take ownership of your tasks in a real and valued role.

    This will support your development and understanding from a technical perspective, as well as developing the important soft skills to make you a well rounded engineer ready for your career after you graduate from university. The list below details the different type of work which you could be involved in:

    • Computer based engineering (software, modelling);
    • Hydrogen Fuel System Development;
    • Particular Risk Analysis – Leakage and Fuel Tank ignition;
    • Ignition and flammability mitigation/characterisation.

    Requirements

    Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

    • Studying towards a degree in Aerospace and/or Aeronautical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related fields;
    • Have a natural curiosity and excitement to explore engineering principles and creating solutions based on technical intuition and evidence;
    • The ability to challenge the status quo;
