    Starting Salary: £28,500
    Location: Hybrid role available all around England

    The Environment and Sustainability Graduate will be fully involved at the operational level, making an impact in environment and sustainability, helping to drive change to ensure we meet the Amey Group and Client environment and sustainability goals, making our highways activities future proof. 

    You will play a key role in transforming the carbon and climate change ambitions of key clients into real actions, whilst we help you to develop essential skills for building future-proof organisations in line with the IEMA Sustainability Skills Map.

    You will be responsible for:

    • Embodying a collaborative approach, working with environment, carbon and sustainability professionals across Amey and others (including Clients, our key partners, and Supply Chain members) to deliver: Zero Carbon Solutions, Nature Based Solutions and Compliant, Resilient & Industry Best Practice Solutions​ across our value chain, helping reduce the environmental impact of our construction, operation, and maintenance activities,
    • Providing environmental advice and support to operational team members, helping to transfer knowledge and improve individual understanding,
    • Working with other Health, Safety, Environment and Quality professionals to provide assurance to operate within the highways domain
    • reviewing and briefing changes in law and standards,
    • ensuring environmental and social issues are identified and factored into the decision-making processes, developing, reviewing, and revising appropriate policies and procedures,
    • working with operational team members to identify environmental risks and opportunities, improving understanding of how our activities interact with the environment and determine effective operational control measures to mitigate significant impacts, including in the event of an emergency, as well as in a changing climate,
    • Supporting development of effective environmental and carbon management plans,
    • Undertaking environmental permission applications (authorised waste, consents to discharge/abstract),
    • determining competence and awareness requirements, providing briefings and training as necessary,
    • monitoring compliance, undertaking inspections and audits,
    • undertaking environmental performance monitoring, analysis, and evaluation, writing reports and making recommendations to our business leaders to drive continual improvement,
    • undertaking investigations into events with the potential for or that have caused pollution or damage to environmental assets,
    • maintaining ISO 14001 certification of our integrated management systems,
    • Active participation in industry associations, groups, and initiatives,
    • Championing best practice and innovation to deliver operational excellence,

    We want to hear from you if you have:

    • Graduate of a University Environmental Programme e.g. Bachelor’s degree or master’s in relevant field such as Ecology, Environment, sustainability or engineering,
    • Student IEMA Membership (not essential),
    • UK’s full driving licence,
    • Passion for developing your skills both professional and personally,
    • Have the enthusiasm to be part of a high performing team and a drive for success,
    • You must be available to join the programme in April 2024,
    • Please note that a clearance check will be required if you are successful in your application.

    An ideal candidate would also have good understanding of: 

    • Fundamental Issues and Principles – the importance of natural cycles, ecological systems, ecosystem services, and environmental limits, pollution sources, pathways and receptors.
    • Fundamentals in Sustainability – the concept of sustainable development, the UN Sustainability Goals as a framework for action and how economic activity regularly creates unintended environmental and social consequences, locally and globally.
    • Fundamentals of Business and Governance Principles and Issues – sustainable business models and the importance of corporate responsibility, corporate sustainability and sustainable business practise.
    • Policy, Regulation and Legislation – main types of environmental law and key policy instruments, the role of the regulator and the benefits and opportunities organisations can achieve in moving beyond compliance.
    • Innovative and Leading practices for a Sustainable Environment - the role of innovation and other leading practices in developing sustainable products and services and providing sustainable solutions.
    • Management and Assessment Tools – lifecycle thinking and the tools, techniques, systems and practices used by organisations to manage compliance and non-compliance.
    • Resilience, Risk and Continual Improvement - tools and techniques used to identify and understand risks and opportunities.
    • Delivering Sustainable Solutions - how a long-term vision for sustainability, with milestones and targets, can improve sustainability performance, as well as how a financial return on investment and wider benefits can create a business case for sustainability.
    • Leadership for change – principles of change management.

    Also, we would expect from an ideal candidate below technical competency: 

    • Analytical Thinking – data collection, analysis and evaluation.
    • Problem reframing and resolution - research, planning and keeping up-to-date with innovations to provide sustainable solutions.
    • Effective communication - identifying stakeholders and using different types of communication to inform, consult and engage.
    • Relationship Development – collaboration and ways of constructively challenging behaviours.
    • Project Management - ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under tight deadlines.
