Are you interested in a career as an Environmental Assessment Consultant?
Right now, we're looking for graduate consultants to join our London consulting team of bright and motivated professionals. As our consulting team offers a multidisciplinary service, we are looking for graduates with diverse skills and interests to join our Environmental Assessments team.
In your first year, you will have the opportunity to spend four months in two or more of our other environmental teams namely: Waste and Resources, Atmospheric Emissions, Contaminated Land, Ecology and Biodiversity, Historic Environment and Sustainability. This will provide invaluable opportunities for professional growth including developing a diverse range of technical skills, a wide support network and a good insight into our capabilities.
From your first day you'll join an unrivalled community of experts, where you will be supported and mentored. You will be guided by a ‘buddy' who will help you to find your feet within the first few months of settling into Arup.
We take professional development seriously, with frequent internal seminars and training and also access to external national training opportunities supporting you to progress towards a professional qualification (Chartership) early in your career with us.
You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high- profile clients. You'll have a good level of responsibility from day one which will increase as you progress and broaden your skills.
During your time in the Environmental Assessments team, your day-to-day responsibilities as an Environmental consultant could include the following
- contributing towards impact assessments;
- preparation of clear, well structured, logical and concise reports;
- coordinating environmental specialists to input into projects;
- supporting project managers including organising meetings, helping prepare agendas take meeting minutes and follow up on actions;
- supporting in the delivery of small scale projects including reviewing and managing budgets;
- undertaking site visits and surveys;
- data analysis of survey results and other data;
- assisting with preparation of bids and tenders as well as preparation of marketing material; and,
- planning your workload so that you can deliver on time or ahead of target.
During the periods of rotation within other teams, your day-to-day responsibilities will vary and could include the following
- reviewing environmental and historical information and preparing reports;
- assisting in the design and undertaking of surveys and site investigations;
- data analysis of survey results;
- support in internal research/skills network activities
- support in preparation for meetings and workshops
- preparation of bids and tenders; and,
- planning your workload so that you can deliver on time or ahead of target.
What we are looking for
We encourage our graduate consultants to demonstrate drive and motivation, to develop a thorough understanding of our sector, and a desire to effectively deliver an excellent technical service to our clients. With a busy, diverse team, we seek individuals who can work flexibly and respond to the needs of our clients. As such, we are looking for the following general qualifications, skills, and attributes in you:
- minimum 2.1 Bachelor's degree or higher degree in Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Geography, GIS, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Archaeology, Built Heritage or Cultural Heritage Management;
- enthusiasm for a career in Environmental Consulting, underpinned by a knowledge and deep interest in the built and natural environment;
- general understanding of and interest in impact assessments in the UK;
- adaptability and versatility to work across and with many environmental, engineering and design disciplines and changing priorities;
- good planning and organisational skills;
- ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally;
- strong reasoning and analytical skills;
- demonstrate initiative and a creative approach to problem solving;
- the aptitude to work on your own initiative whilst being aware of own limits and knowing when to seek guidance;
- recognise the importance of client care including internal Arup clients, and your role in contributing towards it;
- able to work effectively as part of a team being respectful of the views and needs of others coupled with a willingness to re-prioritise activities when needed;
- possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; and,
- interest and ability in digital techniques such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software, InDesign etc. would be an advantage.
