    Overview of the role

    As a product design engineer, you will work on a broad range of product design, mechanical and electrical engineering problem solving, product assessments, mechanical, electrical and digital hardware engineering and programming, presentations, project delivery and development activities.

    • You will be expected to work on various phases of the product development process, including stakeholder need analysis/research, mechanical and electrical product engineering requirements, development and problem solving.
    • You will develop product design using 3D and 2D CAD, communicate ideas and reasons for them design concepts clearly and professionally, using a range of hand-sketching, schematic drawing and graphic presentation. Ability to work with specialist sub-contractor and prototype manufacturers to create product prototypes, mechanical and electrical mock ups and models using a range of rapid prototyping, making, product assembly and prototyping techniques. 
    • There will be a requirement to prepare specifications for products, materials and associated manufacturing processes from time to time. 
    • You will provide support to the senior team and be expected to liaise and work with the wider Arup engineering and design teams. 
    • You will support the senior product design and wider Arup team with new product design business development activities. 
    • You will review, understand and evaluate new product ideas. Apply research to understand need and application and determine potential improvements.

    Qualifications

    • Degree or postgraduate master's degree in product, industrial, innovation or electrical design engineering, Degree or postgraduate master's degree in mechanical and/or electronic product design engineering or related subject. 

    Essential skills, attributes and knowledge

    • Excellent all-round knowledge of the product engineering development process, materials and manufacturing process associated with mechanical and electrical products. 
    • Professional, well organised with an ability to manage projects efficiently. 
    • Excellent communicator of ideas using a range of drawing, visualisation, graphic presentations, model-making and presentation techniques. 
    • Experience of the design, engineering, programming and testing of electronic hardware products. 
    • Experience of MS Office. 
    • Friendly, constructive and personable. Ability to collaborate and seek solutions to problems with colleagues. 
    • Comfortable with discussing, understanding and assessing ambiguous early-stage concepts and ideas. 
    • Friendly professional, a good communicator and listener with the confidence to work well with colleagues and clients. 
    • Ability to develop an evaluation and development route map for mechanical and electrical product ideas.
