About the role

We have an opportunity for a graduate security system engineer, to work in our physical security team based in London. Your role will be to learn the skills associated with designing, specifying and installing physical security measures, across a range of projects.  This work will be guided by our senior engineers and you will follow a structured development scheme, approved by the IET.  You will also work towards professional body accreditation with the Register of Security Engineers and Specialist (RSES) and the Security Institute to provide a pathway to becoming chartered as both an engineer in your own specialism as well as a security professional. This is vital when most of our projects involve working within multi-disciplinary design teams of architects, engineers, cost consultants and project managers to integrate our security solutions into the design.

Working within and outside mandatory codes of practice in a risk-based framework, you will need to understand the strategy behind the proposed mitigation and prepare designs to meet these requirements. At the outset of a project, you will be part of the team responsible for producing Security Needs Assessment and Threat Vulnerability and Risk Assessments, supported by our threat specialists, which will assist our clients to develop their operational requirements which will inform the physical and operational design requirements.

You will work within the requirements of ISO 19650 – Building Information Modelling and assist with the production of information working in a 3D environment using applications such as Revit and other bespoke tools.

This role will require a broad understanding of cyber security but is not part of our core business as this service is provided by a dedicated team within Arup, with whom we work closely with.

Ideally, you will have a background in system, electronic and / or communications engineering which together with strong skills in written, verbal and sketch communication. You will be able to develop into an industry recognised security consultant. You will have excellent organisational skills and an understanding of multi-disciplinary design. You will be collaborative in your approach but able to work independently and will gain a thorough understanding of the role of a Security systems design engineer. At the same time, you will work towards chartership through the firm's accredited graduate training scheme and will also be committed to research, contributing to internally and externally funded research projects and writing conference papers and journal articles as you progress.

In this role you will be required to travel both within the UK and overseas, which could be for periods of up to 3 months, once you have proven you have the skills to undertake projects away from the office.

As such we are looking for the following qualifications, skills and attributes in you:

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • To be self-motivated and be able to organise your workload. 
  • A Levels (or equivalent) (at B or above) including maths and physics. 
  • A Degree in system, electrical, electronic, IT & communications systems or aeronautical engineering, on track to achieve a 2:1/60% or higher. 
  • An understanding of your own limitations and what is required to develop your skills to further your career. 
  • An understanding of the design of electrical systems in buildings. 
  • An understanding of risk assessment methodologies. 
  • Good English written, verbal and sketch communication skills. 
  • An understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how they support design. 
  • Eligibility for UK Security Clearance. Eligibility requires a background check and usually requires a minimum period of residency in the UK but is not limited to UK nationals. 
  • An interest/experience in IT & communications system design, electronic security system design, IP networks, cyber security (This is not a cyber security role). 

You must be available to start this opportunity in September 2022.
