Launch your career with Arup
Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today's built environment. Together we help our clients solve their most complex challenges – turning exciting ideas into tangible reality as we strive to find a better way and shape a better world.
The Studio Team
Digital Studio is our strategic design and user experience team within Arup. Our core aim is to shape a more sustainable, human-centred built environment through creative and innovative design solutions. Being a multidisciplinary team, we combine expertise in design, user research, strategy, storytelling, architecture and technology to deliver services to our clients. We ground the ideas we deliver in participatory research and make ideas tangible through concept design, prototyping and user testing.
The Studio operates across a range of sectors, working with city governments, local councils, developers, universities, cultural institutions, tech companies and infrastructure providers. We have worked with clients such as British Land, University of Melbourne, Victoria & Albert Museum, Alphabet, Highways England, and city governments in Amsterdam, Stockholm and Sheffield, amongst others. We also collaborate with academic partners such as the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL, RMIT University in Melbourne, and the Royal College of Art.
Overview of the role
Designers are central to the Studio's process and take a considerable share of responsibility for the success of our work. An ideal candidate will take part in the following activities:
- Support with conducting research (including desk research, user interviews, spatial or behavioural observations) to generate understanding of spatial and social challenges and inform design work;
- Independently create compelling drawings for new design concepts for spaces, buildings, districts, products, and/or digital interventions. These can vary in level of fidelity, ranging from hand sketches through to line drawings, illustrations, perspective renderings and/or plans. These should help communicate concepts to a range of technical and non-technical audiences;
- Support with creating mockups and prototypes for digital design concepts, such as storyboards, wireframes, user journeys and/or visual renderings, that articulate the desired user experience;
- Support with creating mock-ups and prototypes of spatial interventions and testing these with future users;
- Support with designing workshop artefacts and facilitating workshops for clients, collaborators, and communities;
- Presentation preparation – throughout the process, designers need to prepare various reports, design artefacts, and workshop activities for clients and stakeholders.
