    We are currently looking to recruit recent chemistry graduates into Analytical Scientist roles in chemical development. You will join our Early Chemical Development (ECD) team in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Macclesfield Campus, UK. Within this group we transform brilliant science into real medicines that help millions of people. We are dedicated to the development of pre‑clinical and early clinical active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) across a range of small and large molecules.

    The role

    As a scientist at AstraZeneca you'll apply your expertise to help us deliver great medicines, develop your technical and interpersonal skills and gain a breadth of insight into the business. You will join a vibrant team that is working on the next generation of medicines and play a key role in the development of new medicinal products. We will rely on you to bring a strong analytical perspective to the team across a diverse, multi-skilled area to support the early stage development of drug substances. The function has five departments: Early Chemical Development, Advanced Drug Delivery, Early Product Development and Manufacturing, Data Science and Modelling, and Digitisation. Our wide-ranging portfolio of projects includes traditional small molecules, nucleotide-based therapies and nano medicines across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas.

    What you'll do

    We are looking for scientists who are enthusiastic, motivated and willing to learn. As a key member of the development team, you'll be delivering analytical activities for drug projects to meet development timelines. You will work collaboratively within teams from across skill areas, both within ECD and across Pharmaceutical Sciences, utilising cutting edge analytical techniques to tackle challenging problems.

    Typical Accountabilities:

    • Development of robust analytical methodologies supporting the development of synthetic routes and processes and the release and stability analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients
    • Providing technical support to the manufacture of intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredient for pre-clinical and clinical use
    • Planning and execution of lab-based experimental work in accordance with project timelines
    • Interpreting analytical data and drawing reliable conclusions and recommendations to influence future work
    • Identifying and solving potential analytical project issues
    • Application of technical knowledge to improvement projects and the evaluation of state of the art technologies
    • Utilising specialist scientific and/or technology networks within Pharmaceutical Sciences and beyond for project development and issue resolution
    • Collaborating within cross-functional teams, representing own department or area of expertise
    • Management of own work to achieve drug and improvement project targets in a timely fashion and to agreed quality standards by applying technical knowledge and expertise
    • Presentation of information for discussion at team meetings
    • Liaising with colleagues from other disciplines with the purpose of discussing project-related matters, sharing experiences and reporting progress
    • Ensuring that work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)

    Essential requirements:

    • Degree or equivalent in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry (achieved or predicted 2:1 or higher), graduating in 2023 or in the last two years
    • Degree course must include significant synthetic organic and analytical chemistry content
    • Evidence of ability to collaborate and work optimally within teams
    • Detailed approach to tasks with the ability to plan and deliver activities to deadlines
    • Rational and logical approach to decision making and problem solving, making judgements based on sound reasoning
    • Strong growth mindset with a desire to learn and develop new skills and knowledge
    • Good communication skills, with the ability to deliver information in a clear and effective manner to different audiences

    Desirable:

    • Knowledge of a range of analytical techniques, e.g. Ultra/High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography, NMR spectroscopy
    • Evidence of innovative approaches to problem solving in order to overcome significant challenges
