AstraZeneca requires an individual to join the Robotics and Automation Development Group to support as a Laboratory Technician on a 9 Month Fixed Term contract.
The team includes a group of automation engineers with scientific backgrounds actively collaborating with scientists to provide an adaptable, science-driven approach to applying cutting-edge technologies to develop industry-leading cell lines, production processes, analytical methods and formulations.
The Role
The purpose of this fixed term role is to support the RAD team and wider Biopharmaceutical Development group in preparing for the move to their new laboratories on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The successful candidate will:
- Collaborate with scientists and lab managers to audit the current laboratory equipment within BPD labs.
- Work with software engineers to update our in-house database to ensure all computers and equipment are logged.
- Train in the use of Titian Mosaic sample management software and automated sample handling solutions such as automated labellers and barcode scanners.
- Support groups within BPD to create up to date sample inventories for their fridges and freezers.
- Opportunity to work with scientists and software engineers to help develop workflows to enable more streamlined sample management.
- Participation in in-house meetings as and when necessary.
- Depending on time and interest, there is an opportunity to support an ongoing project tracking the contribution of Robotics and Automation to AZ’s wider sustainability goals.
Full training will be provided; therefore, candidates need not have any previous experience working in development laboratories before. This role would be suitable for a graduate or school leaver looking to gain experience in a laboratory setting, or to broaden their scientific skillset. The role will be predominantly lab based, so applicants should be prepared to be on site every day.
Skills, Knowledge and Competencies
- Essential: Five GCSE’s including Maths, English and one or more STEM subjects.
- Essential: 3 A-levels or equivalent - ideally including a STEM subject.
- A degree in a STEM subject OR previous working experience in a laboratory environment is beneficial, although not essential.
- Prior experience in a data entry role would be preferable.
- Enthusiastic, flexible and willing to learn.
- High level of attention to detail.
- Proactive communicator.
- Good organisational and planning skills – ability to work to assigned deadlines.

- Good problem-solving capabilities and confidence to react promptly to changing situations.
- Good time management skills, ability to be flexible and handle multiple responsibilities and tasks on a regular basis.
- Clear, concise written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic IT skills (including Microsoft Word/Excel).
