What if you could work on something that you cannot test, but cannot afford to fail? What if your job wasn’t your ordinary 9-5? What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?

For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear research weapons research and development. Contracted to the MOD, we have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent – Trident. We also use our unique nuclear skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.

It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?

The role

As a year in industry Nuclear Safety Case assessor/author, you will work as part of a team to identify the design, engineering and operational failures that lead to major hazards. These hazards will then be analyzed to determine their consequences and controls will be identified to prevent and mitigate them. This information will be captured in the appropriate Safety Assessment documentation (e.g. Nuclear Safety Case or other suitable risk assessment) to demonstrate that the risks associated with an operation are ALARP. This work will involve liaising with a diverse group of people at many levels within the company including operators, facility management, engineers and regulators.

During the placement you will join a Nuclear Safety Case team where you will undertake meaningful technical work for the business whilst being appropriately supported. There are opportunities to work across the whole project lifecycle including; design of new facilities, large modifications of existing facilities, production facilities, research & development facilities and decommissioning facilities. There are also opportunities to gain an understanding of the interactions that take place with our regulators who ensure that we remain compliant with the various Licensee Conditions placed upon us.

Interested candidates will most likely be studying a STEM degree (or module) who are looking to use their existing learning and develop in a new technical area (Nuclear Safety Case).  The placement will add to this, through a structured learning experience of both task-based learning and scheduled, sometimes external training opportunities.  Exact taskings will depend on the projects available at the time and the needs of placement students, however, are likely to be assigned low complexity projects and work packages within a larger projects. In all cases, year in industry students will be supported by experienced Nuclear Safety Case personnel, well versed in AWE processes.

We recruit on a rolling basis which means as soon as our positions have been filled, we close our applications.
