About The Story Society

The Story Society is an international research centre and team based at Bath Spa University led by Director Bambo Soyinka, the world’s first Professor of Story. The Story Society investigates and maps the many uses and values of ‘Story’ across cultures, and is home to several innovative programmes including StoryArcs, Paper Nations and the Story Foundry. Our research programmes and projects seek to understand and leverage the power of Story for the public good; that is, to tackle the most pressing challenges of today, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), climate, conflict, diversity, and the future of work and education.

Paper Nations is our Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio Organisation, supporting writers in Southwest England. Paper Nations’ ambitious new programme is Black Writing Matters – we seek to nurture Black Writers, embedding Black talent in all phases of the writing and publishing ecology. The Story Society also delivers StoryArcs, an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)-funded programme investigating the many uses, applications and values of Story Skills. We endeavour to expand public understanding of the many uses of Story as a skill, mode of thought, evidential basis, creative medium and cultural frame.
