About R&D
The Research and Development (R&D) department are responsible for the entire design and development process of all Bentley products, from idea creation all the way through to engineering sign off. Our mission is to inspire our customers by creating extraordinary products through passion, collaboration and sustainable innovation. Our R&D team consists of six departments: Products & Concepts, Body & Trim, Electrical & Electronics, Vehicle Motion, Whole Vehicle Engineering and Technical Conformity.
As an Industrial placement at Bentley you will be working alongside and mentored by R&D industry technical experts, giving you real-life tangible experience to elevate your career journey in R&D.

Engineering – body and trim
Within Body and Trim we strive to engineer, develop and deliver best in class body structures for Bentley’s current and future product portfolios. We work cross-functionally and with the VW Group business: from Design to Digital prototyping, Marketing to Manufacturing. Working with and being mentored by expert industry colleagues you will gain insight into the entire product lifecycle, from concept to production, developing components that can protect our customers and possess the highest levels of hand-crafted luxury with the finest sustainable materials. We have Body and Trim Graduate Programmes available within: Interior and Body and White.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to
- Solving Research and Development and design related problems with company tools by identifying root cause and making recommendations.
- Supporting and leading the design and development of Restraints components
- Collaborating with the whole vehicle safety team to ensure the safety system development meets attribute targets and to plan, manage and analyse sub-system and whole vehicle crash tests.
- Actively contributing in cross-functional forums such as concept package, design for assembly and surface reviews representing BIW & Safety in the overall design process.
- Coordinating with both internal and external design resource to ensure the department’s agreed deliverables are met on time.
About you
The successful candidates will be on track to achieve a 2:1 in the following degrees: Physics, Product Design, Industrial Design or Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical and Materials Engineering. It would be advantageous to have practical mechanical engineering experience and strong attention to detail. The successful candidate will:
