We have an exciting opportunity to join our multi-disciplinary Public Health team in a 12 month Public Health Graduate role working in the Inequalities Team. The role will focus on providing project and business support to the Gender Health Inequalities Project, with an initial focus on development of a women’s health strategy for Birmingham.

The Public Health function, which includes core sub-divisions focused on Wider Determinants, Environmental Public Health, Health Protection, Populations and Life Course, as well as our Knowledge, Evidence and Governance, is an important contributor to this vision through the continual championing of the health and wellbeing of all citizens across the city, but especially those experiencing inequalities.

The role

The role of the Grade 3 (GR3) Public Health Graduate is designed for recent graduates with a degree in Public Health, or other relevant discipline. It will give formative experience in applying the learning in a dynamic public health department over a 12-month fixed period.

The role will consolidate learning from the degree through application of theoretical knowledge to Birmingham’s public health challenges and opportunities, most of which will be specific to the Gender project. It will give the post holder a means to develop experience across the Public Health skills and knowledge framework (PHSKF).

The post holder will work with a Senior Officer in the Public Health Inequalities Team on the Gender Health Inequalities Project in Birmingham. The project involves developing and managing the delivery of a work programme incorporating a wide ranging activity to fully understand and address health inequalities affecting women, men, non-binary and transgender citizens. This work programme should be underpinned by the key principles above and should promote collaboration and co-production with key stakeholders and the communities of experience. The programme will also involve establishing and managing project oversight boards, developing business cases and commissioning specific research initiatives, interventions and evaluations.  By supporting the project and co-ordinating the project’s key outputs, the Public Health Graduate will have opportunities to demonstrate personal impact and outcomes during the placement.

The post holders will develop and apply subject matter expertise and technical skills to specific public health projects and implement practical and rigorous approaches to ensure that work has an impact on health and wellbeing. This includes:

  • Identifying and using suitable sources of data and carrying out data analysis to help establish health needs.
  • Engaging with citizens and other stakeholders to understand the local context of and feasibility of interventions
  • Communicating and presenting innovative solutions and best practice for health and wellbeing  problems  to stakeholders and citizens
  • Supporting the evaluation of interventions
  • Delivering technical pieces of work such as; health needs assessments, health impact assessments, systematic reviews, or health economics analyses
  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders to scope and embed evidence-based approaches
  • Supporting work on equality impact assessments.

Other responsibilities include

  • Project support and monitoring
  • Relevant public health data consolidation and analysis
  • Maintaining web pages and communication channels
  • Engagement with partners and development/ collection of case studies
  • Development and maintenance of project documentation
  • Meeting co-ordination and preparation of agendas  
  • Preparation of reports.

Key requirements - experience and skills

Each graduate must have a Public Health degree or other relevant degree level qualification and must be prepared to continue with on-going professional development within the role.

The post holders must have:

  • experience of working on projects and monitoring performance
  • understanding the relevant policy environment and public health priorities
  • understanding of the importance of public health research and data and how they can be used to make a difference
  • experience and skills of report writing and communicating information to a diverse audience.
