We are looking for an enthusiastic and artistic person with a strong interest in marine biology for a 12-week internship at BAS to help us promote marine science at BAS. You will be embedded within the Adaptations Team at BAS in a joint project with our Communications Team, in a mixed programme of marine biology outreach which involves display design and some preliminary EDI analysis.
Purpose
We currently have a partially completed display, which consists of a fully kitted-up BAS diver and some photo boards, with a very empty display case alongside, which needs serious attention. In this internship we would like you to engage with the Adaptations scientists, the BAS Creative Services and the myriad of dried marine specimens that we have in the building to design a new display for us. This display will be linked to the development of our new Controlled Environment Facility (which includes cold storage, experimental facilities, and a marine aquarium (at 0°C)). Using the Comms Team portfolio of comms activities, we would like you to promote this new facility via, for example, development of new web pages, blogs and interviews with students who have previously used the facility, interviews with staff involved in the design and build of the new facility and also development of display material for the new facility (e.g. picture boards/montages from our extensive image collection).
During this project you will learn a lot about Antarctic marine life: how it survives at 0°C and the threats posed by global warming to these unique animals. You will also gain invaluable experience in science outreach.
