The Academic Skills (ASK) service offers student-facing learning development support across a wide range of areas, including academic writing, study skills, mathematics and statistics. Within the Academic Skills service transition initiatives, such as Peer Assisted Learning, plays a vital role in the support of students. The strategic expansion of PAL across the institution continues to provide vital support to the learning and academic development of all level 1 students.
The Transition Graduate Assistant will play an integral role in supporting these and other initiatives as part of the transition team. Applicants must demonstrate resourcefulness, creative thinking, teamworking and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders whilst managing multiple tasks with varying deadlines in a busy environment. A commitment to supporting the transition of new students into university is also essential.
Graduate students who have previously worked as a PAL Leader, Senior PAL Leader and/or Head Start Ambassador are particularly encouraged to apply.

Main Accountabilities
We are seeking a Transition Graduate Assistant from Brunel who has previously worked as a HeadStart Ambassador, Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) leader or Senior PAL Leader (SPL) to work within the Academic Skills (ASK) team.
This varied role will assist the Academic Skills Transition Adviser in the running, maintenance and development of the current transition initiatives taking place within ASK for the 2023/2024 academic year. The Transition Graduate Assistant will work with students and staff from a variety of academic courses.
Applicants must demonstrate resourcefulness, creative thinking, teamworking and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders. A commitment to supporting the transition of new students into university is also essential. Further, the ability to manage multiple administrative tasks in a busy environment and independent working is required.
Facilitation of PAL related workshops and tasks would play a key part of this role. Experience of using digital media (website and social) would be beneficial.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Being a key contact for incoming enquiries in relation to PAL
- Monitoring the PAL mailboxes
- Assisting with the general delivery of the PAL programme
- Data entry and collation, such as recording student attendance and evaluation data
- Facilitation of group discussions and the use of a range of small interactive group learning activities
- Supporting observations and training of PAL Leaders, both in person and online
- Supporting transition events in person or online such as at PAL Leader Training and Fresher’s Fayre
- Maintaining the online presence of our transition initiatives through social media, Brightspace and the Brunel webpages
- Supporting and taking part in transition research activities such as surveys and focus groups
