Bryanston currently has an exciting opportunity for a passionate graduate to assist with History of Art initially for one year.
This role would ideally suit a History of Art graduate interested in exploring the teaching profession and gaining experience in the thriving History of Art Department of a busy co-ed boarding school. Bryanston has a long tradition of teaching this subject to sixth form students. We currently teach the Pearson/Edexcel specification.
There is a vibrant community of staff living on site, many of whom also undertake residential boarding house duties with accommodation provided.
Full induction and support will be available, and although this is an appointment for one academic year in the first instance, there may be an opportunity for the right candidate to have their employment extended as part of our in-post PGCE teacher training programme, in due course.
Main Responsibilities
Acting as a resident in a boarding house
- to be fully committed to the workings of a boarding school.
- to support the Hsm and DepHsm to foster a climate in which positive behaviour becomes the norm, excellence and all round contribution are applauded and diversity is valued, so that pupils feel secure, supported, appreciated and happy
- to undertake daytime, evening and weekend supervisory duties by arrangement with the Hsm and DepHsm. Duties may vary slightly from house to house, although they will be in accordance with guidelines laid down by the Senior Deputy Head.
- to take responsibility for the pupils within the care of the resident. The top priority always being the safety and welfare of the pupils.
- to be fully aware of any specific information relating to the pupils and ensure the pupils know where to find the resident in case of a problem.
- to be aware of the house absence procedures for pupils, specifically which pupils should be away for the night and whether any pupils are expected to return late.
- to ensure the house is secured at night.
- to sleep in the house every night of the term, unless permission has been granted from the Hsm in advance.
- be present overnight, fully able to perform their duties. Although the residents’ flats are their homes, residents have obligations to meet with regard to maintaining high standards and setting a good example in communal living and specifically should seek to avoid noisy or disruptive activities.
- to attend full staff, house, department meetings and pre-term INSET as required.
- to attend House events and support pupils in their care in co-curricular activities where possible.
- to be familiar with the administration of meds procedures for the pupils in their boarding house, completing training as required.
- to assist the Hsm and DepHsm with any allocation of responsibility to facilitate the smooth running of the House.
- to assist with the centralised weekend activity programme on a rota, as required.

Teaching History of Art
- Involvement in school classroom teaching in the History of Art department. A History of Art Graduate will be assigned classes depending on particular strengths and interests and will receive detailed and regular support from colleagues to ensure confidence in the planning and delivery of lessons.
- One-to-one supervision, particularly for exam candidates.
- Involvement in junior school PSRE programme.
