    We are recruiting for a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice to join our friendly and innovative Manchester Infrastructure team, who are involved in a wide variety of challenging and exciting projects. This Degree Apprenticeship is offered in partnership with University of Salford.

There are also wider groups such as the Young Employees Forum (YEF) for those at an early stage of their career which provides a wider peer network across the many design, advisory and consulting disciplines that is Buro Happold. The YEF not only organises professional development events but has a wider focus on encouraging participation in voluntary activities and social events.

    Salford University will provide an excellent course programme which comprises of six modules per level of study, which are designed to meet the accreditation requirements of the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). Alongside five of these modules, you will complete an integrated design exercise which blends the learning and skills from each module to the application of a client brief.

    Starting salary on offer is £22,000 plus additional benefits.

    What will I be doing?

    Within our Infrastructure team we develop the strategies and designs for the core infrastructure systems needed to support the built environment. This includes land formation and earthworks, roads, streets, foot and cycle paths, storm water management and sustainable urban drainage systems, foul water, potable water and power networks and digital infrastructure. Our team works from early-stage feasibility studies and master-planning, preparation of strategies to support planning processes through to the completion of designs for construction. The scale of projects can range from large building plots to district, city and regional scale in the UK and internationally. Typically, Infrastructure leads on the large scale multi-disciplinary projects due to the broad set of skills that are needed in the group. As part of Buro Happold’s Infrastructure team you will develop your knowledge and skills to;

    • Embrace the latest infrastructure technologies to improve sustainability and resilience. Sustainable design is top of our corporate agenda.
    • Use building information modelling software to design engineering services on projects learning from colleagues and in-house training. Most of projects are now designed within Civils3D.
    • Undertake preliminary and detailed design and calculations (using both software and knowledge to verify robust calculations) of the core infrastructure systems, to ultimately achieve at the end of your apprenticeship, the confidence to undertake designs under the supervision of a Senior Engineer.
    • Ensure service and project work are carried out to an excellent standard - within agreed deadlines and within budget.
    • Prepare technical specifications and schedules, design development reports and innovative design solutions.
    • Plan and manage input to Computer Aided Design programmes for production of design work.
    • Assist in the management of projects complying with Buro Happold project management procedures.
    • Represent the company as part of a team attending design team meetings or meetings with client and other professionals.

    What do I bring to this role?

    • A keen interest in the built environment and a desire to develop your skills to design the broad range of site wide infrastructure systems, coupled with an aptitude to develop these skills alongside use of information modelling software and design tools.
    • A strong commitment to complete your day release studies and successfully achieve a civil engineering degree award.
    • Confident, enthusiastic, proactive and 'can do' attitude.
    • A positive and inquisitive approach and the confidence to ask and respond to challenging questions.

    What qualifications will I need in order to enrol?

    • English Language and Mathematics GCSE at grade C/level 4 or above (or equivalent e.g. Level 2). You must fulfil the GCSE entry requirements as well as one of the requirements listed below:
    • UCAS tariff points: 104 - 112 points
    • GCE A level: 104 - 112 points including mathematics at grade C. (Numerate science at grade C). A Pass in the practical element of science A levels must be achieved.
    • BTEC National Diploma
    • MMD, must include Distinction in maths modules.

    What do I get?

    • Successful apprentices will graduate with a BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering University degree (Level 6)
    • Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status upon Completion. Mentoring and support to achieve IEng and further industry accreditation
    • Support throughout your apprenticeship: apprentices buddy network, mentoring, young employees forum, structured on-the-job learning plan
    • Understanding and hands on experience of infrastructure work in the built environment.
