Cancer Research UK is the world’s largest charity dedicated to beating all types of cancer. We now have an opportunity for you to join us as a Strategic Evidence Intern.
What will I be doing?
Role and purpose
Strategic Evidence sits within the Policy, Information and Communications directorate which aims to keep cancer at the top of the political agenda to improve patient outcomes. We influence policy and practice for patient benefit by reviewing, consolidating and disseminating cancer related evidence across the cancer pathway including Diagnosis, Treatment and other topics as required. The Strategic Evidence Team's vision is that everyone with cancer is diagnosed as quickly and effectively as possible and has access to the optimal treatment for their case. To do this we monitor and evaluate the evidence of new emerging technologies in cancer early detection, diagnosis, and treatment, including considering the impact of said technologies to the public, patients, and wider healthcare system.
The Strategic Evidence team house expertise and insight of many innovations from across the patient pathway, such as artificial intelligence, liquid biopsy, advanced radiotherapy, genomics etc. The team continually work to expand their breadth of expertise across the cancer innovation landscape to align with policy priorities and maximise impact. The role of the intern will be to contribute to initial research, scoping and appraising of the evidence base of an innovation area of strategic interest. It will involve desk-based research of the primary and grey literature, engagement with a range of stakeholders and collaboration with other internal teams followed by triangulation of insights from all sources. This work will inform CRUK’s strategic thinking in this area and provide the background for future work. The intern will produce several outputs: an evidenced internal briefing document and accompanying blog/article, and internal presentations.
Key responsibilities
- Developing a sound knowledge of the research evidence (peer reviewed and grey literature) and other data and insight relevant to the commercialisation of cancer biomarkers.
- Monitoring and reviewing research evidence, including peer reviewed and other publications, and interpret findings.
- Interpreting and synthesising findings and writing reports on evidence and other content/outputs as required, in order to feed into strategy, policy and practice.
- Disseminating evidence knowledge and synthesis to several audiences, including internal and external stakeholders.
What skills are you looking for?
You’ll be able to bring to the role:
- Strong evidence searching, reviewing and critical appraisal skills, with ability to distil to the key points quickly.
- Ability to translate complex information for a range of audiences, with a sharp eye for detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Confident self-starter, able to manage own workload and operate to tight deadlines.
- Positive 'can do' attitude with excellent problem-solving skills.

Application process
Stage 1: Online application
Complete an online application form – you’ll be asked to answer a motivational competency question and upload your CV.

Stage 2: Assessment
If your initial application is successful you will then be invited to complete our new situational judgment test. The test poses real life scenarios that a CRUK intern might be met with in their day to day role and asks how you would tackle that scenario. This is un-timed and multiple choice. Please let us know if you think you might require adjustments for this assessment.
Stage 3: Audio submission
If you are successful in the previous stage, you will be asked to complete an audio submission, answering competency-based questions. The questions will be emailed to you and you will have a few days to submit a response via an audio recording (no video required).
Stage 4: Interviews
If you are successful in the previous stage, you will then be invited to a face-to-face interview at our head office with representatives from the team you are applying to.
The Internship will start on Monday 1st July 2024.
