    About the role

We are now looking for a clinical student who would like to be considered for a 3-month paid Internship between June and August 2024.

Project: Investigating fairness/bias within clinical datasets

This year we are looking for a clinical intern who has an interest in fairness and bias in AI algorithm development and evaluation in the medical domain. An understanding of fairness and bias is particularly important within the healthcare domain for both medical ethics and health equity purposes. Bias within the clinical datasets used for training, testing and development of AI algorithms can lead to significant harm to an individual patient or patient sub-population due to under-representation e.g., sex or gender bias, socioeconomic bias etc.

The clinical intern may work with multimodal medical data but will primarily work with text data or imaging metadata. The project scope will include investigation into the regulatory aspects of bias within clinical datasets. A literature review will also be conducted to identify clinical metrics of fairness and bias, and importantly how we translate these findings to the use of AI algorithms. This knowledge can then be applied to a selected medical dataset. They will work in a multidisciplinary AI team with clinical staff, scientists, and software engineers.

    About you

The applicant should have some undergraduate medical or biomedical knowledge that they are keen to build on and may, for example, be a pre-clinical medical student. The project will require understanding and interpretation of medical documentation and literature, so prior medical experience and knowledge is required. The applicant will be conscientious, and analytical with good attention to detail. Any additional experience related to medical ethics or similar would be a bonus. Similarly, knowledge of AI algorithms is not required for this clinical internship but would be a bonus.

    Application process

To be considered for these vacancies please apply below. Please state on the application form which topic area is of interest to you e.g. Application Development or Image Analysis. Closing date for all applications for the Summer Internship Programme is Friday 12th January 2024. Following the closing date, a shortlist will be drawn up and successful candidates contacted to proceed to the next stage of the recruitment process.

The placements are planned to commence on Monday 3rd June 2024, although there is flexibility in this. The internships will adopt a hybrid working approach between our Edinburgh office and home working. Based on recent feedback from previous interns, some time working in the office should be expected to fully benefit from the experience.
