At Caterpillar, you build what matters—whether it’s the career you want, crucial work skills, strong relationships or new technologies. – Our work is powered by our people.
Who is Caterpillar?
We are the world's leading manufacturer of Construction and Mining Equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. Operating from 50 countries around the globe, the Caterpillar brand has developed into a symbol of strength, respect, and integrity. The organisation has a clear vision to be the global leader in providing customer value in the markets in which it operates. Our core values (Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment and Sustainability) are key to our success.
What do we do?
The Integrated Components & Solutions and Advanced Power Products teams offer some of the most exciting engineering roles within the Caterpillar global organisation. Working on the integration of electronic and electrical systems for Caterpillar products provides the opportunity to work with multiple disciplines within the organisation.
The integration of the latest Electronics and Electrical technology helps differentiate Caterpillar products from its competitors by enabling exceptional performance and value to the customer. Our engine control systems control air and fuel delivery with millisecond precision to maximise performance and minimise exhaust emissions. Our electric drive control systems control electric motors and batteries to provide optimal performance for battery-electric products.
Our integrated machine systems control all aspects of construction machine operation (engine/hybrid/full electric, transmission, hydraulic systems), provide the human-machine interface (operator controls and information displays), and constantly monitor and communicate position, operation, diagnostic and prognostic information to enable machine automation, improved productivity, and enhanced serviceability. Our battery pack products offer state of the art low emissions alternatives and come with advanced control software and telematics to power deep integration.
We are pleased to have a number of student positions available this year, including 3 graduate roles and 5 placement positions.

When we leverage our people's experiences, backgrounds and cultures in an inclusive environment, we enable every individual to achieve their full potential, which drives business success. We are proud to be named in the Forbes list of Best Employers for Diversity (2019) and to be the employer of one of the top 50 Women in Engineering (WE50 2021). Caterpillar is an equal opportunity employer, and we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.
What experiences can we offer you?
We offer a graduate training scheme consisting of four 6-month placements, giving you the opportunity to work in a number of areas focused on the integration, development, application and validation of electrical and electronic control systems for diesel engine, full electric drivetrain or construction machine products.
You will be an active team member working on real development projects, alongside experienced engineers, gaining exposure to system specifications, embedded software design and development, control system modelling and analysis, component selection and validation, system level development and validation, product health analysis or quality issue resolution. You will also collaborate with team members worldwide as part of the global team.
Working with experienced technical team leaders and mentors you will receive all the coaching, guidance and support for your work, personal development, and professional accreditation. At the end of the scheme, we will find the best fit for you in one of our engineering teams with consideration given to your career ambitions and to our business needs.
Our training scheme is structured to meet IMechE/IET requirements, and a mentor will support you through the Monitored Professional Development Scheme to gain Chartered or Incorporated Status.
We hold a Meet and Greet day for all new UK Graduate students to provide you with an opportunity to meet fellow new starters across the UK before you start your placement.
What happens after the graduate scheme?
After successful completion of the rotational programme, you will progress into a key role where you will directly contribute to the operational and project activity that is at the heart of our business. We will provide you with the training and support you need to be successful at Caterpillar.
Who are we looking for?
You will need to be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and capable of learning quickly in a fast-paced development environment. We are looking for someone with an interest in applying electronic technology to the control of mechanical or hydraulic systems.
Whilst this role is primarily focused around electronics and electrical systems, it is not essential that you are studying in this discipline (Approximately 40% of the current team come from other engineering disciplines).
