You will have the opportunity to work with others across our organisation and you will be directly involved, and at the heart of our business, participating on strategic projects.

    The Skinningrove site operates under the Wear Components Business Unit of Product Support & Logistic Division (PSLD) which currently includes Operations facilities on 3 continents. The Skinningrove facility produces steel track shoes for 'Cat track' found on Hydraulic Excavators, Track Type Loaders and Track Type Tractors. The automated manufacturing operations include the following equipment and processes: robotics, steel cutting, shearing, machining, heat treatment and painting.

Our placement students can expect to return to university with further developed technical skills and experience of how University learning is applied to the workplace.

    We also operate a conditional offer process; our highest performing placement students are fast tracked to our graduate development scheme. This includes a financial incentive and the potential of a summer work placement. Offers will be made based on the condition that a graduate role is available at the time of your graduation and that you achieve a min of 2:2.

    During the industrial placement you will be based within the Engineering team, working on real improvement projects. The Engineering Team are responsible for leading production employees to execute the production of track shoes through our heat treatment and paint facility, to delivery a world-class product to our customers.

    You’ll be working alongside an experienced Project Engineer, gaining first-hand experience of Lean Manufacturing and supporting efficiency improvement initiatives at the facility. This placement will be integral to implementing our facility modernisation and digital and automation strategy, which may include projects such as:

    • Automation and robotic handling of product – implementation of new systems where appropriate and gather appropriate data to facilitate continuous improvement
    • Digitalisation and cloud-based systems for the facility
    • Working towards paperless facility/operations
    • Growth to improve capacity and improve factory and facility efficiencies

    Your placement will be integral to work on project feasibility studies to build business cases for identified improvement opportunities.

    You will be required to interact and liaise with other departments internal and external to the business.

    We hold a Meet and Greet day for all new UK placement students to provide you with an opportunity to meet fellow new starters across the UK before you start your placement.

    Recruitment Process

    Here is a brief overview of what you can expect when applying to our Early Career roles…

    • Online Application: The first stage of the process is to complete the online application and attach your CV, this must be done before the closing date of the role that you're applying for. Once we reach the close date, we will begin reviewing all our applications, this may take a little while and we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if you have been successful in moving forward to the next stage.
    • Stage one – Video Interview: If selected, you will be invited to attend a pre-recorded user-friendly video interview which you have one week to complete and submit. You are able to record your answers several times to allow you plenty of practice if required. Please ensure that you check your spam emails for this invite. At this stage if you are successful, you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre either onsite or virtually between January and April 2024.
    • Stage two – Assessment Centre: The Assessment Centre day will look at a range of behaviours such as teamwork, decision-making, communication, and problem-solving. We aim to make these days fun, inclusive and as relaxed as possible.
    • Stage three – Offer: After the Assessment Centre, the Caterpillar team will review the feedback and extend offers to our preferred candidates, we aim to do this as quickly as possible. Placement Students will start on 8th July 2024.We look forward to receiving your application to join Caterpillar!

    • Applicants will be on target to achieve a minimum of 2:2 honours degree level in a relevant discipline – Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, Control Systems, Integrated Engineering.
