Unleash your leadership potential, with the exposure, networking and development opportunities you need to shape your own way forward and help improve millions of lives.

What could I be involved in as a Diplomatic & Development Economics Fast Streamer?

Shape your future leadership career at the heart of development, global macroeconomic policy and international relations.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) promotes the interests of British citizens, safeguards the UK’s security, defends our values, reduces poverty and tackles global challenges with our international partners. Economics is central to the work of the FCDO, and Diplomatic & Development Economists work on some of the most diverse and rewarding projects in government. At the heart of our decision-making on policy, partnerships, diplomacy and spending, their analysis gives Ministers fresh ideas about complex issues and deep insights into policy options.

No two Diplomatic & Development Economists share the same career path. As a Fast Streamer you’ll take on three different high-profile roles during this three-year scheme. Working with a range of stakeholders including other government departments, consultancies, international organisations and academia, you’ll grow your expertise on country-specific projects as well as thematic projects that look across international borders. You can expect to spend your first two years in UK-based roles before having the option to apply for a role overseas.

Growing your knowledge, skills and experience

With access to the wide range of courses offered by The Diplomatic Academy and Government Economics Service, you’ll build postgraduate level knowledge in key areas of macroeconomics, international economics and development economics.

Other development opportunities include masterclasses on trade policy and how to communicate effectively with ministers, and 5 weeks of learning focused on leadership and developing your skills in diplomatic tradecraft and international development. All this will be supplemented with on-the job-training, regular seminars with leading academics, and peer-to-peer learning from economists across the FCDO network.

    To apply, you’ll need

    • British citizenship (those with dual nationality may apply).
    • To have been a resident in the UK for at least 5 of the previous 10 years, including a consecutive 12-month period.
    • A 2:1 degree, degree apprenticeship or higher, or a post-graduate degree (or be expecting to achieve any of these) in an economic subject. For mixed degrees, at least 50% should be in economics.

We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process.

All Diplomatic & Development Economics Fast Streamers must be granted ‘Developed Vetting’ (DV) security clearance before starting.
