Get on the Fast Stream and you’ll be encouraged, enabled and empowered to become a Civil Service leader, tackling the issues that matter to you and UK life. Whatever you want to achieve, whatever your degree subject or background, there’s something here for you.
What could I be involved in as a Generalist - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fast Streamer?
On the Generalist scheme, you’ll work on issues of national importance, driving forward policies and delivering operations that change society for the better.
Driving innovation, the STEM sector encourages the divergent thinking and creativity that’s critical to realising our vision of building a skilled, innovative and ambitious Civil Service equipped for the future. That’s why we’re keen to attract more people with STEM degree backgrounds to join the Fast Stream. We’ll encourage you to use your full range of skills in a variety of roles, to bring a new perspective to areas like the development of public policy.
With postings in different departments – from the Cabinet Office to the Department for Work and Pensions, among others across the country – you’ll also be exposed to roles in different government professions including Corporate Services, Operational Delivery and Policy.
It’s an opportunity to build a depth of knowledge across a variety of areas. With each role you take, you’ll build a different set of skills, with emphasis on your leadership development.
Growing your knowledge, skills and experience
The scheme starts with a comprehensive induction before you start your first posting. Each 12-month posting will enable you to keep building core leadership skills as well as your understanding of government. In your second year, you may also have a secondment to a charity or a different area of the public sector to support your development.
Day-to-day contact with a manager based in your department will ensure you’re challenged and supported in your role. We’ll also support your growth with e-learning, posting-specific learning and action learning sets, as well as performance assessments to identify any further development needs.
