Get on the Fast Stream and you’ll be encouraged, enabled and empowered to become a Civil Service leader, tackling the issues that matter to you and UK life. Whatever you want to achieve, whatever your degree subject or background, there’s something here for you.
What could I be involved in as a Houses of Parliament Fast Streamer?
On this scheme you’ll be at the centre of all that’s going on in Parliament.
As a Houses of Parliament fast streamer, you'll be based in either the House of Commons or the House of Lords. You'll work with politicians from all parties to support the UK's democratic process.
Working closely with MPs or members of the House of Lords from day one, you’ll build your understanding of the complexities of Parliament and how it works. As your confidence and knowledge grows, you’ll provide MPs or members with impartial and informed advice on different issues and how to achieve their parliamentary objectives. And you could find yourself working on high profile select committee inquiries or seeing MPs or peers in the Chamber act on the advice you’ve given.
You’ll grow your experience through a variety of roles. Working at the heart of democracy, you could be involved in facilitating debates, recording votes, managing inquiries or evidence sessions, or assisting in the scrutiny and passage of legislation. You’ll also be involved in the management of Parliament and its daily business.
Growing your knowledge, skills and experience
This scheme will give you the experience and skills you need to develop your potential to be a future leader in the Parliamentary Service. Most of your learning will be on the job, in roles with real responsibility from the start. You’ll also benefit from an induction, regular training sessions and seminars, and support from your line manager, the Fast Stream lead in whichever House you’re based, a buddy and a senior mentor.
Other development opportunities include a specialised programme of learning to help you gain an understanding of Parliament and parliamentary procedure, and visits to organisations relevant to Parliament.
To apply, you’ll need
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- A 2:2 or higher (or be expecting to achieve this) in any degree subject, including degree apprenticeships.
We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme.
