We’re looking for Azure data engineers to join us and help transform the way we do business. Co-op is changing. We’re developing a new data centre of excellence, bringing together data engineering, data science, analytics, insight, data governance, and business intelligence.

    The role

In this role, you’ll pair with your peers using coding languages such as Python and SQL to solve complex data problems and identify new opportunities to optimise outcomes across our Retail, Customer, Funeralcare, and Insurance business areas. You’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary, agile engineering squad and be tasked with designing and building data solutions within a Microsoft Azure technology stack.

Our data engineering career pathway has been designed to give everyone within the team a clear progression path that they can pursue at their own trajectory, in line with their own ambitions. If you can bring us passion, energy, and the technical foundations that we need, we can offer you the chance to build your career, produce solutions that’ll touch millions of members and customers, and collaborate in our mission to create a fairer world.

    What you’ll do

    • design, build, and run enterprise data solutions within our Azure data platform
    • hands-on development of data pipelines using Microsoft Azure technologies and programme languages such as PySpark and SparkSQL
    • contribute to the physical data architecture and engineering roadmap for one or more data domains
    • work closely with partners from across the business to understand their data problems and work with them to design solutions that satisfy their needs
    • work in a DevOps culture, building automation and quality into everything that we do
    • collaborate with peers within the data engineering community of practice to improve ways of working, our standards, and our platform

This role would suit people who have

    • experience using coding languages such as Python or SQL, with exposure to emerging Azure technologies
    • experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering teams and delivering modern data architectures
    • experience of contributing to the design of data architectures and physical data models
    • an ability to evolve and expand your own technical skillset in-line with emerging trends
    • experience with lean/agile development practices – DevOps, CI, CD, TDD
    • a future-focused approach, with knowledge of new and emerging technologies and how we can use these to solve modern business problems
    • excellent problem-solving skills, helping us to improve on legacy solutions and resolve live issues
    • proven experience of working as part of a team within an enterprise level data environment

    Why Co-op?

Here you’ll do work that matters. We’re a commercial organisation with a purpose beyond profit. You’ll have an opportunity to help us build a stronger Co-op and stronger communities. You’ll also get a package that includes…

    • competitive salary
    • coaching, training, and support to help you develop
    • pension with up to 10% employer contributions
    • annual incentive scheme
    • health and wellbeing rewards through the YuLife app
    • Wagestream – a money management app that gives you access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
    • 28 days holiday (rising to 32 in line with service)
    • 30% off Co-op branded products in our food stores (increased from 20% to support colleagues during the cost-of-living crisis until March 2023)
    • 10% off all other brands in our food stores (increases to 20% on the Friday and Saturday after payday)

    Building an inclusive work environment

We’re actively building diverse teams and we welcome applications from everyone. We want to build inclusive work environments, where our colleagues have equal opportunities to reach their full potential. We celebrate our differences and recognise the importance of our teams reflecting the communities they serve.
