The Mechanical Engineering Department delivers mechanical engineering scope for consultancy / operational delivery / design projects within multi-discipline engineering teams primarily in the Natural Resources Division of Costain Group, in Energy, Water and Nuclear Sectors.

Purpose of the role

Typical deliverables and activities include:

  • Specifications and Datasheets for Mechanical Equipment
  • Enquiry and Purchase Requisitions for Mechanical Equipment Packages.
  • Technical Bid Evaluations for Mechanical Equipment Packages.
  • Vendor design documentation review for Mechanical Equipment Packages.
  • Factory Acceptance Testing attendance for Mechanical Equipment Packages.
  • Process Flow Diagrams 
  • Mechanical Flow Diagrams
  • Mechanical Handling Diagrams 
  • Plant Layout
  • Pumping system calculations
  • Pressure Equipment calculations

To deliver the Engineering & Design Function within a specialist Mechanical Engineering Group, working primarily in the Natural Resources Division of Costain Group, in Energy, Water and Nuclear Sectors.

The job holder reports to the Chief Mechanical Engineer / Mechanical Engineering Discipline Lead. 

It is expected that the job holder will generally be assigned to projects and therefore day to day reporting will be to project Lead Mechanical Engineer.

Location

**This role is based in our Manchester Office - but you may be required to visit different sites, so a full UK driving licence is essential.

Costain Graduate Development Programme

The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job and through external training as needed.

The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond. We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.
In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.

Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including energy, nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.

Responsibilities

  • To carry out design tasks delegated by the project Discipline Engineer or Engineering Manager 
  • To be responsible for checking of design work in accordance with Company Procedures.
  • To liaise with other engineering disciplines as required
  • To provide support to Estimating, Proposals and Construction/Commissioning as required.
  • To be responsible for own development and training, by following the individual training programme and identifying opportunities for development.

Note

In the above descriptions the term “design” is used in its broadest sense and covers design calculations, specifications, equipment selection and bid evaluation, requisitioning of equipment, approval of supplier’s documentation and provision of contract documentation.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A Graduate Mechanical Engineer should be a degree qualified engineer aiming to develop in order to become an experienced engineer with broad experience as well as specialisms within a particular sector / discipline.
  • An appropriate Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent in mechanical engineering or related discipline.

Desirable

  • Experience in one or more of the following mechanical engineering fields:
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Nuclear
  • MEng Mechanical Engineering
  • Aspiration to achieve Professional Qualification as a Chartered Engineer
