    About the role

    The Government Economic Service (GES) summer scheme is aimed at economics students who are considering a career in the GES after graduation. The placements generally last between 6 and 12 weeks and take place over the summer period.

    We have multiple posts across the following agencies:

    • Department for Transport (DfT)
    • Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)
    • Department of International Trade (DIT)
    • Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)
    • HM Treasury (HMT)
    • National Audit Office (NAO)
    • Office for National Statistics (ONS)

    Key objectives for the role include

    • Gaining knowledge and skills of government economics
    • Experience of working in the Civil Service
    • Working alongside experienced government economists
    • Raising awareness of the job opportunities available

    Experience

    You will be assessed against the following, during the selection process:

    • Knowledge of micro and macroeconomics
    • Analysis of data

    Applicants must be studying for a degree in economics or a joint degree where economics comprises at least 50% of the course so far.

    This scheme is only open to students in their penultimate year of undergraduate study and who are on course for a 2:1 or 1st class degree as demonstrated by their first year results.

    Your qualifications

    Where we have asked for candidates to provide a name-blind (anonymous) CV, you will need to ensure you clearly list your year 1 and 2 (year 3 if applicable) degree modules, number of credits per module per year, clearly marking which module is Economics by putting 'econ' next to the modules and your first year degree grade.

    You do not need to list your GCSE’s or A-Levels.

    Responsibilities

    • Data analysis using MS Excel and other statistical software
    • Contribution to economic data gathering and analysis
    • Communicating complex analysis in non-technical language to non-economists

    All candidates will be offered a role based on merit and location preference will be taken into consideration but is not guaranteed.

    Please note that some departments require candidates to have a UK footprint for 3 years and no period longer than 3 months outside of the UK to get security clearance e.g. DIT, FCDO, ONS, HMT.
