The EBRD is committed to promoting environmentally sound and socially sustainable development. Within EBRD, the Environmental and Sustainability Department (ESD) is a team of specialists primarily responsible for the environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's portfolio of projects in various sectors and the custodian of the Environmental and Social Policy (2019) and Performance Requirements (ESP and PRs).
All projects financed by the EBRD need to be structured to meet the requirements of the ESP and PRs. This includes specific requirements related to project supply chains under PR1 on environmental and social assessment and management, PR2 on labour and working conditions, and PR6 on biodiversity conservation. EBRD clients need to identify potential supply chain risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures to prevent or mitigate these. These supply chain requirements focus especially on forced labour and child labour, as well as risks to priority biodiversity features and/or critical habitat.
With the momentum created by recent expansion of mandatory supply chain due diligence regulations and EU proposals for new regulation on Corporate Sustainable Due Diligence as well as deforestation and forest degradation, coupled with growing recognition that environmental and social risks and impacts tend to increase in project supply chains, the Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD) has initiated an assessment of existing approaches to supply chain due diligence with the aim of strengthening supply chain provisions, due diligence and monitoring processes and achieving improved outcomes.
