The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) is a non-profit organisation that supports informed debate on energy and climate change issues in the UK. We provide independent analysis and accessible briefings to media and other stakeholders on key issues, including land use, transport, power sector, and heating and buildings, with a UK focus but with links to our international work.
We are looking to recruit an Analyst to help take complex technical insights and new research and turn it into accessible information on key developments in the net zero transition.
The Analyst will report to the Head of Analysis, who oversees analysis across ECIU’s programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Keeping abreast of developments in climate and energy policy;
- Conducting analysis using a range of data types and sources;
- Communicating conclusions to colleagues, including assumptions and any limitations;
- Contributing to drafting of written materials and preparation for meetings with stakeholders;
- Developing and maintaining a network of stakeholders, including experts in ECIU’s areas of interest, and learning to brief journalists who make use of our research.
Required Skills and Experience
Essential
- Analysis
- A graduate, with a strong analytical background;
- Ability to quickly analyse simple data and summarise conclusions in an accessible way;
- Ability to conduct rigorous in-depth analysis;
- Experience of conducting analysis in energy and/or climate topics;
- An ability to use data to tell a story.
- Knowledge and Context
- Understanding of key challenges and opportunities associated with net zero transition;
- Understanding of UK decarbonisation policies and politics;
- Appreciation of wider political and economic context, including objectives of key actors in the public sector, private sector and NGOs.
- Communication and Networks
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent command of English;
- Ability to develop networks of contacts who can advise on ECIU’s analysis;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Programme Management
- Experience of scoping and undertaking research projects;
- Ability to work independently;
- Being a team player.
Desirable
- 1-3 year's experience of working in energy or climate;
- Understanding of the UK media, particularly its reporting of energy and climate change;
- Familiarity with Government data sets and other key sources;
- Experience of writing to deadlines or in quick turnaround situations;
- Experience of briefing stakeholders.
Terms and Conditions
This full-time position is initially offered as a one-year contract with a view to extending to a permanent contract in future.
Salary is £30-40k depending on experience.
This is advertised as a full-time position. We are open to considering flexible working arrangements. Notionally, the post-holder will work from ECIU’s central London office, but some degree of home working is permitted. Some degree of flexibility is necessary, with occasional out-of-hours work needed and setting ‘getting the job done’ as a priority – but this flexibility works both ways.
Travel within the UK may be necessary from time to time. Holiday entitlement is 30 days per year, plus statutory holidays. ECIU also provides an auto-enrolment pension scheme with Aviva.
