    This is an exciting opportunity to influence how environment monitoring data is gathered to inform internal and external customers actions on their response to changes to the environment.

    About the role

    Based with the National Field Monitoring Team, you will help us deliver/collect quality environmental monitoring for Nationally and Locally commissioned programmes. We will give you the transport and, in all weathers, you will take a range of samples, including river water quality, effluents, bathing water, invertebrates, diatoms, and groundwater boreholes. You will work towards qualifying as an Officer in Charge for electric fishing surveys.

    You will be expected to gain a wider, strategic monitoring perspective and skill set. Your learning will be developed/applied to different monitoring environments assigned to you on a seasonal basis. This holistic partnership approach to your development will give you opportunities to gain knowledge, experience of end to end monitoring processes through research/analysis, coastal surveys and laboratory services.

    At the end of your traineeship, your collaborative and strategic knowledge of environmental monitoring will give you the opportunity to identify improvements to field based activities. In doing so you will be able to influence the future direction of the National Monitoring Field Teams, enhancing our ability to monitor the environment to enable others to make effective evidence based judgments on the future of the environment in England.

    Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, you'll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment. Full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

    The team 

    The National Monitoring Field Team covering Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, based in Exeter. This is a field based role with extensive driving to urban and rural locations taking samples and environmental data for local, national and statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information for multiple teams working across the Environment Agency and we expect the successful candidate will spend time as an embed with some of those teams based in the region.

    To be eligible for this role you will need to meet ALL the following criteria:

    Criteria 1

    • You are a UK, Commonwealth or EEA (European Economic Area) national
    • You have the right to work in the UK

    Criteria 2

    • Must have a minimum of an honours degree in Biology, Geography, Environmental Science or Chemistry, preferably with an applied ecology, physical geography, aquatic systems or environmental chemistry focus or modules covering these areas.
    • Driving Licence (Full UK Driving Licence or equivalent authority to drive in the UK)
