We are offering a 12-month internship position for an undergraduate student to work in our team supporting the delivery and analysis of high-quality GIS products.
You must be in your second year of an Undergraduate Course at University - either a sandwich course with a year in Industry or be able to defer a year to complete the internship scheme
The role
During the 12-month placement you will have the opportunity to work with our team of specialists to deliver high quality spatial data products. You will mainly work with our LIDAR team, processing data from raw point cloud through to digital surface models and analysing elevation data but may also include working with other remote sensing datasets. Personal & professional development will be gained through job shadowing and on the job work experience allowing you to gain practical work experience and build up skills in activities such as problem solving, time keeping and teamwork.
Daily tasks may include:
- Processing data captured using our airborne LIDAR.
- Production of high-quality Digital Surface Models and classification of surface objects to create Digital Terrain Models.
- Generation of QC reports and archiving of data to ensure availability for future use.
- Using GIS and remote sensing software to undertake complex spatial analysis of elevation and other spectral datasets.
Please note we are unable to accept masters course students or Graduates for this position.
The team
The National Monitoring Survey team works with National & Area teams to co-deliver all the monitoring requirements of the Environment Agency and the wider environmental community.
The team provide a range of specialist services, to enable effective evidence to be used across the business. This includes the collection and analysis of Lidar, Aerial Photography & Satellite data. We focus on delivering the highest quality data, providing a fully integrated approach to the delivery of geo-information.
Experience/skills required
- You must be in the penultimate year of a relevant undergraduate degree programme, which includes content on Remote Sensing and/or GIS.
- You'll have a well-developed sense of spatial awareness and be interested in a future career in Geomatics or the environmental sector.
- You should have a keen interest in GIS and remote sensing.
- Experience in using ESRI GIS software would be advantageous.
- Basic theoretical knowledge of LIDAR systems or other remote sensing platforms would be beneficial but is not required.
- You should be highly computer literate and feel comfortable learning new software’s. Team building and problem-solving skills will also be useful to enable you to get the most out of this opportunity.

- The team office is based in Bath. It’s expected you will be working in a hybrid manner, combining working remotely with office-based and be willing to travel as necessary for face-to-face training/meetings.
