Essar Oil UK is a leading UK-focussed downstream energy company whose main asset is the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex, one of the most advanced refineries in Europe and situated close to the major cities of Liverpool and Manchester. Stanlow is a key strategic national asset, annually producing over 16% of the UK’s road transport fuels, while playing an important part in Britain’s petrochemical industry by providing key feedstocks.
The business is a major supplier in the North West and beyond with customers including most of the major retail brands operated by international oil companies and supermarkets, Manchester Airport, leading commercial airlines and the region’s trains and buses.
The business covers crude and product trading, refinery operations, HSE implementation, maintenance support and technological services, together with marketing and retail activities. Our commitment to maintaining safe and healthy working conditions and following the best operating practices to protect the environment underpins everything we do.
We employ over 900 highly trained and loyal staff, who are at the heart of everything we do. The company has an embedded safety culture, technically challenging work across the different parts of the business and some of the best training available in the energy industry.
Essar is committed to playing a key role in the decarbonisation of the UK economy, with ambitious plans to build a green energy industrial cluster at Stanlow. These include the construction of two new low carbon hydrogen production units on site as part of the HyNet consortium, with a planned total investment of approximately £750m to deliver the hydrogen production hubs. Follow on capacity growth is planned to reach 80% of the UK Government’s new target of 5GW of low carbon hydrogen for power, transport, industry and homes by 2030.
Non-rotational Graduate Programme
A three year program that focuses within a specific skillset area. There will be a range of different assignments within the specific Departments but not within the wider Company. These Graduate Schemes are designed to grow and develop a core skillset and associated learnings.
You will join the advanced process control group; a team core to the operation and optimisation of the refinery processes. Over the three year duration you will spend time working on a variety of technologies and systems which support the automation of the process to deliver the required safety, environmental and margin benefits. The program is designed to provide exposure to a range of areas ranging from definition of business objectives to the implementation details of advanced process control schemes and optimisation technologies.
One primary area of focus involves working with the process engineers to understand the production processes and the associated business requirements to identify areas for advanced process control to add value to the business. This will then enable you to propose and lead ensuing projects to realise these benefits. This provides an excellent opportunity to understand and work with the wider business and develop your skills not only in business case justification but also in managing projects with a range of stakeholders.
On the technical side there will be significant exposure to data analysis, making use of a large volume of process data to analyse performance and build dynamic process models to predict plant behaviour on a real-time basis. This will develop skills in areas such as data validation, data cleansing, variable selection and statistical analysis. These dynamic models are then used to enable real-time controllers to be built to optimise production. The understanding of implementation requirements is a key part of this program and there will be the opportunity to develop detailed knowledge in the control systems that are used to implement control strategies. This will also introduce some of the legal and regulatory requirements for the business, such as COMAH requirements and management of change.
During the program there will be the opportunity to support the process control function in the context of wider projects, critical to the success of the business. These projects are agreed based on business requirements and the development needs of the individual. It is also envisaged that there will be the opportunity for the individual to shape the future direction of process control at Stanlow, identifying new technologies that can be applied to provide additional business benefits.
