About Exscientia
Exscientia is an AI-driven pharmatech company committed to discovering, designing and developing the best possible drugs in the fastest and most effective manner. Exscientia developed the first-ever functional precision oncology platform to successfully guide treatment selection and improve patient outcomes in a prospective interventional clinical study, as well as to progress AI-designed small molecules into the clinical setting. Our pipeline demonstrates our ability to rapidly translate scientific concepts into precision-designed therapeutic candidates, with more than 25 projects underway. By designing better drugs, faster, we believe the best ideas of science can rapidly become the best medicines for patients.
As a summer intern in Quantum Mechanics (QM) you will work on implementing and testing new quantum mechanical toolkits. QM calculations are notoriously slow but provide vital and necessary accuracy; your work will offer valuable insight into the algorithms and methods used in the tools developed by our QM team including scalability, accuracy, parallelisation and automation.
We’re seeking an intern to join us this Summer for a period of up to 12 weeks. You will contribute to our mission to develop better medicines, faster, to people around the world.
Please ensure you attach a Cover Letter outlining your suitability for/ interest in this role otherwise your application may not be considered.
As the intern in QM you will have the opportunity to:
- Contribute to cutting edge research in the QM team and beyond by implementing and testing new quantum chemistry workflows which will impact the tools being developed for real drug discovery projects
- Learn more about quantum mechanical algorithms and their application to drug design
- Develop your programming skills in python and unix
- Gain insight into how research is conducted in an industrial setting
- Think independently and be part of a team who are passionate about applying QM to the drug design process
Requirements
- You are a BSc or MSc student studying chemistry
- You have basic Python programming experience, possibly having written scripts to automate tasks
- You are familiar with key algorithms and methods used in quantum chemistry including Hartree Fock (HF) theory, density functional theory (DFT) and semi empirical method
- You are willing to try to figure things out yourself but are not afraid to ask for help when stuck on a task
- You are interested in drug discovery
Benefits
- Work together to make a positive contribution to patients by revolutionising the pharmaceutical industry through AI-driven discovery.
- The opportunity to acquire valuable skills, work on problems that matter, and learn from world-class technological and scientific leaders.
- Opportunity to join an inclusive, collaborative and intellectually stimulating culture
- Our team’s health and well-being is important to us we offer a generous holiday allowance, provide flexible working and remote working to encourage all of our team to manage their own work, time and life along with wellbeing and mindfulness support.
